Spec me walking trainers?

Not sure why you're using the past tense... The only reason I took the Karrimors is because I have an order coming from M&M Direct anyway, so it costs literally nothing to add them to the order, and at least one item is going back, so there's no cost to send them back either.

I'm still very much undecided.

Go and find a proper running/sports shop where they know what they're on about and tell them exactly your requirements.
Try the suggested shoes and make a note of the make/models.
Come home and see if you can get them cheaper online.

It's a whole lot of effort to go through for something I might not actually do.... which is why I didn't want to spend a great deal.

I do enjoy a walk, and I need to do some exercise, but I think it might be a bit of a mistake to go full on and get measured and recommended something expensive before I've even started.

For the sake of £20 as long as they're comfortable I'll give them a try... the worst that can happen is they go in the bin :)

As much as I prefer shopping online, I think your option is what I'll do if I find I do start walking a lot.

Some googling also turns out that I need to watch the wear pattern on the trainers to see how I walk and what kind of shoes I need. I don't think I can do it on the stuff I have now, as I move around the office etc in them rather than walking on pavements. So it might even work well to try the £20 ones just to see how they wear.

I'm thinking if they're comfortable I keep them and if not they go back.

The Halk, I feel the same as you tbh. I may buy some potentially **** ones, and if I don't use them it's not the end of the world, and if I need to get better ones then I will if I've actually committed to exercising...

I wear Sketchers just now. They're comfy but not when I walk for a while in them, and the soles aren't very hard wearing, the pair I have on today are 6 months old and I've worn some parts of the sole smooth already.

Yeah very true, I wear mine for walking about an hour everyday on hard ground and they last about 6 months.
