Hi, I am looking for some help on building a new rig. I do a lot of video encoding etc on my current system, and now feel it is time to upgrade. My current set up has been running for the last 2 years like a dream, I have never had any hassle from it and it has been running practically 24/7, I am looking to build a new solid, stable rig, which will do me for another 3 years or so.

I have the opportunity to buy a new sealed Intel Core i7 860 2.80Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1156) for £175, so I would like to build the system around the 860. I am not sure if my power supply will be up to the job, even though it handles my current set up with ease, also not sure if I need to upgrade the graphics card, will it affect the speed of video encoding or is that handled by the CPU?

This is my current set up below, I am on a bit of a tight budget, so I am planning on selling my current board, CPU etc, I would like to stay with an Asus board, as I have been more than happy with my last two.

Help most appreciated.

Hi there,

Looks a pretty solid build and will crunch video editing with that i7 + 8gb ram combo.

And in answer to your question, a HX520 will be more than up to the job of powering that setup.

You could however spend a lot less on a 1156 motherboard, and potentially look at a slightly more powerful graphics card. I had that graphics card once in old Dell system, whilst it would do the job, it would occasionally lag when playing back 1080i HD.

A 512mb Radeon 4650 would be a nice upgrade for just over 40 quid.

Yeah if i was spending that much on Mobo/CPU then Id go for a 920

How about?

Planned build:
Case:Silverstone Temjin SST-TJ09B £0.00
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) £199.98
Asus P6T SE Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £143.99
Drive:LG H20L £0.00
corsair h50 £55.00
