soon we will be moving house, as soon as we have bought a new house, my dad will be buying a new car, our new home will cost roughly £600,000 so i thought his new car should cost roughly 10% of that but he is wanting to spend 5-10% of that so anywhere between £30,000 to £60,000

my dad is 47 years old, the car he wishes to buy within the next 10 years is the lamborghini murciealago or however you spell it, but he cant afford it just now so hes gonna go for something a bit more sensible until he can

ill give you a brief history of the cars i can remember he has owned

a few vans
citroen zx
volkswagon golf
bmw 3 series
toyota supra 3 litre twin turbo
mercedes c class (current car)
volkswagon golf (current car)

wide varied list there - we currently have the 2 cars from that list which we will be keeping, they are only a few years old

anyway my dad has his heart set on a 4x4 for some reason but has also wanted a convertible for some time as well, but has also shortlisted other cars too, this is the shortlist so far

BMW 3 Series Convertible
BMW 6 Series Convertible
BMW X5
BMW X6 (not released yet)
Mercedes M-Class
Range Rover Sport

My List that i reckon should be added to the shortlist

Audi Q7
TVR Sagaris (i should hopefully own one of these within the next 5 years, however my dad says its a complete no-no)
BMW M3 Saloon (not released yet)
BMW M5
BMW M6
Porsche 4x4 (the cayenne or however you spell it)

right now if you had £60K to spend on a 4x4 or convertible what would you buy, is our shortlist along the right lines? the car must seat 4 people comfortably (this comes into play with convertibles), my dad is getting old and concerned about running costs, insurance etc, he would like a diesel something with decent mileage but grunt when he needs it, thats why he has the X5 as his top seed just now, he also has the bmw 3 series convertible at a close second seed, i however would prefer the Audi Q7 or the bmw 6 series convertible

now putting all these things into perspective

the real shortlist is

BMW X5 (3 Litre Diesel)
BMW 6 Series Convertible 635d Sport 2dr
Audi Q7 4x4 3.0 V6 TDI S Line 5dr
Land Rover Range Rover Sport 4x4 2.7 TDV6 HSE 5dr
Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4x4 ML320 CDI Sport 5dr

well my dad has just been awarded a large sum from a court case he has won, he has been fighting this court case for a very long time, approximately 10 years, for this court case he had a team of lawyers, his QC gets paid £600 an hour, i dont know how much the others get paid, but his legal fees for the court case has ran well over £100,000 (i wont go near the real figure since the forum is full of morons)

so for the past 10 years he hasnt had all the money he would normally have, so we had to move home to a much smaller home, but still in a very affluent area, he also had to do with much cheaper cars, Volkswagon Golf TDi, Merc C Class, but he always boguht them brand new

the reason why he has a few vans is because he's self employed, we own many business's

anyway since we have got enough money now, we will be moving back into a similarly sized home as the one we used to live in, and after that would now like to own a luxury car, my dad has always wanted a convertible or a 4x4, we already have a Merc C class and a golf these are new cars still

so the consensus is the 6 series or the range rover sport, both which were on his shortlist anyway, i still reckon the audi Q7 is worth a buy too

as for the whole lamborghini thing, most of the money we have won will we invested into current business's or new ones, so im sure he will be able to afford it, within the next 5-10 years, but i doubt he will buy one since it aint exactly economical for him

anyway the usual idiots of this forum were unfunny as usual

as for the 10% comments, thats what the general consenus normally is, your home should cost 10 times your yearly salary and your car should cost 1 years salary

if you were to work from that my dad would earn roughly £60,000 a year but he wont be earning that much this year, roughly 2.45 million from what ive heard, only £450,000 is from the court case

taken out court details

since my dad is a businessman he tends to make sensible decisions, if he wants a diesel hell i aint gonna argue with him, its his money, if you would do it differently thats fine, but i dont really care, all i asked for was help with a decision going to be made within the next couple of months, instead most of the posts thought they would try and be funny, i dont really care if my family has more money than you do, i work for everything i own, the only time i ever recieve money from my dad is when its my birthday or christmas, i am grateful to be in a position where i can take over the family business's when i finish university

anyway an admin can lock this thread now, its done, probably gonna go with the range rover sport

It should? Are these unwritten rules of life or something that everyone should know about?

it was published somewhere, i cant remember exactly where i read it, but it is true, your home should be 10 times your wage and your car should cost 10% of that, obviously it isnt a law and for all means you can knock yourself out and live ina £100,000 home and buy a bentley, but its up to you, when it was published it had all sorts of other facts, of how much you should spend on other items as well, as i say this isnt a law so you feel free to spend whatever you want, its your money

Wierd thread.

As been said, I wouldn't be spending 60k on a car if I had to worry about the running costs.

already owned a 3litre twin turbo toyota supra back in the day, it was rapid and fun, but not exactly very economical, not exactly worried about running costs, but dont want them to be extremely high, i will be using the car from time to time and dont wanna be forking out £80 a week for petrol

:D1 years salary: My dads is more than yours
How much you paid for your car: My dads is more than yours
How much did your house cost: My dads is more than yours

is this the new e-penis? e-dadness? :D

this thread was originally intended to help make decisions on a new car, people got jealous, thought they would try and make fun
