He will be driving 3 miles to work and 3 miles home again 5 days a week for 1 year from July.

So 2340 miles for the year with a few extra every now and again. He wants the cheapest motoring possible. 19 with 0 ncb so low insurance is a must. He's open to ideas on the car, no preference as long as its cheap to run, gonna have a year MOT and not an estate/4x4.

No set budget but he's looking at cars between about £500 and £1500 if that gives you an idea, no £2k cars or stretch for this or that it really does need to be bargin basement motoring.

MPG isn't important due to the low mileage but no 3litre V6's as this will be horrific for insurance.

I've thought of Mondeo, Fiesta and some sort of old Honda or Toyota but don't really know enough about running older cheaper cars on budgets.

It need not have any resale value at the end of the year as his placement will be up and he'll look at getting something different and just scrap the car or sell it for whatever its worth.

Whats the point, a grand for the car, a grand for the insurance, £200 for tax and MOT and £300 a year on petrol just for 6 miles a day is a waste. It'll work out roughly at £6 a day just for a three mile journey each way. Don't moan about rain, some waterproof over trousers and a coat will keep them warm for all the 15 mins they'll be riding :)

I didn't realise he said "3 miles" - but now that i do - tell your friend to do this! The amount you'll save will be amazing - plus you'll be getting fitter in the process.

3 miles on a bike should only take what? 15 minutes?

He does need a car for other stuff though, shopping trips and such which would make things hard without some sort of car.

Would take about 20minutes each way which I doubt he would want to do in the winter months, plus forgot to mention 5 miles each way on a Saturday.

He was thinking of a £500 1 year MOT runner and £500 on insurance should keep it all under £1k.

Provided you can find a car worth buying for £500 and insure the thing for £500 which will be difficult for a teenager with no ncb.

Can hop on his parents policy as his mum doesn't have a car atm and would use it weekends/evenings so thats 4 or 5 years ncb I think.

i run one 32 miles every day and then after college callouts normally are 20+

its fine lol infact perfect for what he wants because i use to be a callout engineer and i had to use my car and it never ever let me down. got my ncbs up (on 2nd or 3rd) and its cheap to buy

slam it in 5th in a 30 zone ull use bugger all in fuel cuz they are all ecotec :) and you can service it urself cuz its sooo simple with a haynes

(thought i should add, those miles will drop by the end of this year)

It may save him 30p a week in fuel driving a Corsa in 5th at 30 but for a 2002 it'll cost him £2.5k to buy the thing.

Im sure it is "fine" but theres really no reason to own one over a fiesta or anything else really

Doing 30 in 5th will labour that crappy little engine. You wanna be doing that speed in 4th. As for the 'ecotec' thing, it's just a label on the engine cover. You also wont get a corsa C for that money. It'll be a corsa B and I'd rather have ebola than a corsa B.

£1k -£1500 will buy a nice Mk1 MX5 for him, great for the summer and not too far to travel in the winter. Not expensive to maintain, reasonable mpg (not that it would matter for the limited miles he's driving and open top goodness.

Also see: Mr2 (mk1 or mk2), Nissan 200SX, Toyota Celica in the sportier side of the market.

Corsa is the ultimate dribbling tard car, proof that a fool and his/her money are easily parted.
