Does anyone know it the "loophole" with these cameras has been closed? It was announced back in 2006 but I haven't seen anything since..

damn. :-)

not been caught or anything but there is a needless 40mph zone which i need to travel through every day. They have decided to cone off 5 miles of motorway so they can work on 200 yards of it..

How liberal is specs?

I'm not local so if I did set them off I would not hear anything anyway but some people flew through them, most I would ever do is creep to 55 in a 50 enforced zone and back to 50 every now and then. Mainly when I was sick of other cars so close/in other lanes and unable to stay straight.

at least they are working on it.

not at the time of the morning i go through it they aren't. thats the problem...

I still do the "change lanes" trick but I can't find out if the law has been amended...

How would changing lanes work?

I am assuming the cameras are clustered and read the breadth of the motorway as a whole, if they did not "network" registration data between them it would be a pointless system!

Simple. Take off your front plate, snap it, stick it in the boot. If you get stopped by a copper, show them it and try to persuade them it snapped earlier that day. If they give you a fine anyway, deal with it - it's £60 apparently :p

Loving all the people who think that each individual camera works on the problem by itself.

Cluetip - they all go into a central ANPR system. It doesn't care what lane you're in.

How about just sticking to the speed limit? They're not just arbitrarily made up by one bloke to annoy you

It used to work on a per-lane system.

The home office only approved it for use on a single lane.

On roads with multiple lanes, SPECS are only home office type approved for measuring speed in one lane. So if you change lane they'll ignore you. On motorways it is not uncommon to see SPECS cameras covering lane 3 only in the hope of catching the fatest cars.

Since you seem to know all about this, would you care to show us the relevant legislation?

There's a law that says that a piece of law-enforcing technology works in a particular way? I can't show you something that doesn't exist

If you want to kick some common sense into gear, you only have to look at sections of SPECS-covered road where there are more cameras than lanes. Unless you think they only monitor certain lanes?

*edit* if people are desparate to read something, go look at the manufacturer's website - http://www.speedcheck.co.uk/specs.htm. Note the fact that the next-gen SPECS system has (apparently) been approved by the home office and allows for rearward-facing cameras as well.
