IT Support for a Retail Sector Contractor
we supply the retail sector with hardware and software. Interesting point to note here, just about every major highstreet retailer will be using a pc for a till. They all run various different versions of windows, and fundamentally just log their users on with limited user accounts, lock everything down, then load the POS (point of sale) screen over the top to hide the windows background underneath. Control is done by generic touchscreens that can be bought off the shelf, or by keyboard / mouse.
Most retailers use hardware provided by IBM, with the harddrive an PSU built into the monitor (much like the Sony Vaio multimedia PCs) They are usually P4 intel units, with 40gig disk and 512mb or Ram.
others use hardware provided by Wincor Nixdorf, which is just a desktop base unit with a P4 1ghz and 512mb of ram hidden into the cash desk.
Some of them even choose to do EFT (electronic funds transfer) on tills running on windows 98.
anybody scared at the prospect of their credit cards being entered into a windows 98 till ?
as for why we're bored. If the tills aint broke, we dont need to fix them. If they dont need fixing, theres nothing to do. Its a bit quiet today so its nice and relaxed.
