Good folk of OcUK,

I am in the market for a new base unit that will comfortably run Oblivion in 1280x1024 with all graphical whistles & bells enabled (full draw distance, distant lands, HDR, etc.) while never/rarely dropping below 30fps.

The rig will mostly be used for gaming, but sometimes for office applications or multimedia work. Budget for this is around £1000.

I need:
  • CPU
  • Motherboard
  • Graphics Card
  • RAM
  • Hard Drive ~250Gb
  • Case
  • PSU
  • Possibly an aftermarket cooler
  • DVD-RW Drive

Thanks in advance and I will try and respond to suggestions whenever possible.

EDIT: Forgot to add, I am willing to do some overclocking if necessary, but am by no means an expert and this needs to be taken into account.

I'd probably suggest something like this with overclocking in mind, even at stock it should be pretty effective(I don't play Oblivion so can't say for certain) but you would have a lot of potential in the system. You could go single core if you are certain that you won't be using the dual core part but I'd say it was worth it even 'just in case'.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-152-AM) - £200 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/AMD_64_X2.html

This CPU is dual-core and very overclockable so will essentially give you an FX-60 or thereabouts, a monster of a CPU for the money and a good bet for future games as they will soon support multi-threading.

DFI LanParty UT NF4 SLI-D (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-013-DF) - £112 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Socket_939.html

The motherboard is one of the finest, a DFI model based on the NF4 Ultra chipset and overclocks like a demon.

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-048-PC) - £250 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/X1800_Series.html

This graphics card has a stonkng 512MB of memory and performs significantly better than the equivalent Nvidia cards in Oblivion, it chews the game up and spits it out at the resolutions you'll be playing at max details. There is no better card for the money if Oblivion is your thing, it even outperforms the 7900GTX in some scenarios http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/oblivion_high-end_performance/page5.asp

Corsair Value 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit (MY-006-OK) - £111 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Corsair_Value_Select.html

The RAM is Corsair value 2GB and will storm through the latest games, as well as allow overclocking no problem when using a divider. 2GB really does make a difference, and at this price it's a sin not to make the jump. Don't be fooled into thinking "it's value therefore it sucks" as nothing could be further form the truth. All games will need it soon enough, and this is great value for money.

FSP Sparkle FX600-GLN Epsilon 600W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-002-SK) - £82 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/FSP__Sparkle_.html

This PSU is a belter, and one of the most highly reccommended in its price-range. FSP are a top brand with great manufacturing quality and these PSU's are very efficient, in fact they rank amongst the top in that department. It has enough juice for all your needs and mroe and is very quiet due to the 120mm fan.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940) (FG-000-AR) - £19 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_Arctic_Cooling.html

Solid and very quiet cooler for a great price. It will serve you well and be barely noticeable noise-wise.

Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80GB 800JD SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-023-WD) - £35 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/westerndigital_sata.html

This will be your main windows C: drive, 80GB is large enough for all program installs and it's a nippy little thing. Don't install game son this drive, see below.

Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-046-WD) - £65 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/westerndigital_sata.html

This is your dedicated drive for all your game installs, backups, and downloads of videos or whatever. A dedicated gaming drive is always reccommended as if you have to reformat your C: the information is all there still. Use this drive to do a weekly backup of your C: too as it's more than spacious enough.

Antec P180 SPCR Advanced Super Midi Tower Case No PSU - £85 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Antec_160.html

The daddy of quiet yet excellent performing cases. Two of my friends have oene and they completely swear by them due to the innovative noise-killing design and awesome build quality. I am getting one myself soon I think.

Total including VAT = £965

Or replace the X1800 for a HIS X1900XT http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_This_Week_Only_25.html#aGX_2d048_2dHT for a grand total of £1'035

That my friend is imho the best rig full of high-quality parts that you can make for Oblivion for under £1000 including postage with enough change to fund a night at the pub. :)

The only thing you can do to better imo that is to spend a little extra and replace the X1800 with an X1900 which would bring the total to around £1'035, but if you're only gaming at 1280*1024 that might not be that necessary as the X1800 will handle that fine. :)

Thanks for your suggestions so far guys, they have been very helpful. I'm glad to see you have both suggested ATi cards, as I seem to have been sold by them. I've read that their Oblivion performance is better than the nVidia offerings, and they also allow HDR + AA at the same time.

I have borrowed suggestions from both your builds and have bodged one together myself...

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-152-AM)
£169.95

DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-014-DF)
£79.95
I have lumped with the DFI Ultra-D. Even though it is not SLi/Crossfire compatible, I can't ever see myself buying a second video card to go along side the first.

OcUK Value 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit (MY-006-OK)
£94.95
I like this RAM because it's cheap, but will it hold me back when trying to get the best out of the 3800+ CPU, as I hear they overclock very well?

Antec P180 SPCR Advanced Super Midi Tower Case - No PSU (Black) (CA-049-AN)
£79.95
One of the nicest cases I've seen - great find! I went for the black though, even though its a few quid more.

Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-046-WD)
£55.50

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940) (FG-000-AR)
£15.95

FSP Sparkle FX600-GLN Epsilon 600W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-002-SK)
£69.95
How does this compare against the Tagen? Its a higher wattage, but is 600W really needed with only one graphics card?

NEC ND4570 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM (CD-030-NE)
£24.95

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-060-PC)
£264.95
Would it be worth paying the extra £60 or so for the XT-X? I wouldn't be against this, even though it would push me over budget, so as the returns justified it.

Subtotal £856.10
VAT £149.82
Total £1,005.92

Any further comments or suggestions are most welcome.

No its not worth the extra for the XTX as the XT overclocks to XTX speeds anyway. Plus you are only gaming at 1280*, you dont need that much horsepower.

As for the PSU... I already suggested that one and it is better than the Tagan, Google some reviews.

You should also really have two hard-drives as opposed to a single drive for backup and to use as a seperate drive for games etc. :)

you might aswell get the corsair value ram and get the good samsung modules that are very overclockable for the same price

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Corsair_Value_Select.html

and its on this week only

Going to make a few changes to the spec I posted. Have decided to go for a less expensive case and motherboard, and slightly improved RAM.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-152-AM) - £169.95

Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-046-WD) - £55.50

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-060-PC) - £264.95

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS) - £119.95

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Black Aluminium Midi-Tower Case (No PSU) (CA-054-LL) - £48.95

Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-088-AS) - £59.95

Subtotal £830.10
VAT £145.27
Total £975.37

How does this look for a final build? My only concern is the Asus mobo. How will this compare against the more expensive DFI Lanparty Ultra-D from the previous spec? Remember that I'm not a serious overclocker and I'm not really interested in SLi.

Comments welcomed.

I personally don't like the layout of the BIOS on ASUS mobos, with its sections across the top, left to right. Plus the buttons to change the settings on your selected options is different, plus and minus, instead of the arrows on other boards.

As your getting a cpu that is pretty much begging to be overclocked, I really do think you should spring for the DFI. If your not overclocking though, all boards are pretty much the same these days...oh and about SLi, theres no point getting an SLi board if your getting an ATi card, two ATi cards needs a Crossfire board.

I really can't justify spending an extra £70ish for SLi that I will likely never use, unless this board has something else special going for it that I don't know about. I'll be overclocking some, but not sure I need all the options that this expert will offer.

Is the DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D really worth the £23.50 extra over the Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra though? I'm not bothered about the menus, and I'm not trying to set the record for the best 3800+ o/c. I would like to hit 2.5Ghz with it though. Will both boards allow this?

Ive got the A8N-E and it does me fine for a bit of overclocking (see sig). Im sure that the DFI is better but theres nowt wrong with the asus ( especially as I only payed £40 for it in clearence )

A 6800GS recommended over an x1900? LOL

You will get like 8fps using a GS using max settings compared to 35fps on an x1900.

I am genuinely not just saying this because I posted it but the spec I posted is the best you will get for your budget, period. It's stacked full of top quality components, and the RAM I used is also based on the Samsung UCCC modules which are amazing performers, I have some myself. And you really hshould get 2 hard-drives. :)
