if you do give a speech, just make it short, tell people about how long you've known him. Tell a story about when he did something honourable, then tell a funny story about something he did embarassing. Copping off with a fat bird or whatever.

Don't think speeches at a 21st are that odd. Most of the people I know and/or went to school with had fairly formal events for their 21st - marquee, dinner anything up to around 100 people, speeches by godparents/friends, big **** up, sleep on floor of marquee if you ever go to sleep.

Maybe it's just a public school thing?

Milestone isn't it? Just traditional to celibrate a 21st more than others. I.E 16th, 18th, 21st then thats it lifes over.

Plus legal adulthood, isn't it? Many age-restricted products (sex, booze, other sorts of sex) were restricted to 21 and over for a long time. The majority of strip clubs now are still 21 and over. It's just one of those classic milestones, as Begbie says.

A speech though, that's something new. Are you trying to ruin his night? What have you got planned for later, a boggle tournament before you retire to the drawing room for brandy and cigars? Only the very end of that night has any validity, and should definitely take place early on (i.e. when most of you can still see).
