Speech for mate's 21st party

I'd go with this.

Don't think speeches at a 21st are that odd. Most of the people I know and/or went to school with had fairly formal events for their 21st - marquee, dinner anything up to around 100 people, speeches by godparents/friends, big **** up, sleep on floor of marquee if you ever go to sleep.

Maybe it's just a public school thing?

Well at least one person knows where I'm coming from.

Most of the time I am the drunkest, most embarrassing guy at the party etc. etc. I had no idea that the proposition of a slightly more formal occasion just for a 21st was such a strange concept to so many people. Trust me if there weren't parents there and I hadn't been formally asked there would be more litres of puke involved than words.

Thanks for nothing! :)

Get up in front of everyone and do the whole "speech preparation" act.

Once they're all quiet, call him up to the front as though you're going to give the big speech.

When he's next to you, start off as though you're about to give the speech, then...

Smack him right in the balls. When he drops, pour a shot of tequila over his face. Shout "Happy 21st, BITCH!"

Done.

Milestone isn't it? Just traditional to celibrate a 21st more than others. I.E 16th, 18th, 21st then thats it lifes over.

why ? surely 18th is what counts in this country ? thats what we celebrate round here anyway.

seems americanised to me. like proms and super sixteen

as for the speech if there really has to be one then shouldnt it be by the birthday boy to thank everyone for coming

Well for the most part we aren't the type of guys to bother with formalities and should it be any birthday but a 21st i would probably be buying him x number of drinks where x is his birthday multiplied by about 8; but for once it's a relatively formal occasion so perhaps a top shelfer or strippers wouldn't be too appropriate. Never mind!

You're going to buy your friend 168 drinks?!

16th is a classic UK birthday, as is 21st. Remember that the age limits we have now haven't always been the same, and that's basically what an age milestone is - being legally allowed to do things you were doing yesterday anyway.

Interesting to see, I find, just how wide the gulf (still) is between the classes.

It never fails to amaze me how both sides can still have such alien customs and ideas.

For me, my 21st was a pretty standard night out with friends, as i'm sure it was for most people on here, there were no speeches, in fact aside from a few drinks, very little special attention was paid to me. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. The thought of a large group of people gathering to celebrate me getting older, at that age, would have been mortifying. Yet as the OP (and a few others in the thread) have proven, for some this is almost an expected kind of event and entirely normal.

No real point to this response I guess, I just find it interesting. Different worlds and all that.
