Speed cameras on the M1

Last night I was driving south on the M1 between Luton and the M25 about 10pm and was passed by a couple of Mercs that must have been doing at least 90. Shortly after one of them received a double flash from one of the gantry mounted cameras.

I've been driving more slowly through managed smart motorway areas since reading about Somerset activating their cameras permanently but hadn't heard about it being phased in elsewhere. First time I've ever seen a gantry camera flash.

Just something to bear in mind.

Yeah I've also seen it on the fairly recently upgraded section of the M25 in between the M23 and M26 junctions. Seen many cars get flashed on this section even when the speed limit signs aren't on.

I don't get why some of these people risk it.

On both the M25 and M1 I refuse to go an faster than 70mph as I have no idea whether those cameras are working or not.

Same as me on the M1 northbound around Luton area on Tuesday night. Sitting at just over 80 and a couple of cars overtook through a gantry and got flashed doing about 90ish.

Seems to be 90mph+ triggers them.

I assume they don't know about it or have false plates. Like those people I see quite regularly driving full speed through 50mph average speed zones.

I normally drive through them at an indicated 75 and make sure I never hit one at over 80 as I just don't know. 10% + 1 is 78mph so they could start fining with my speedo reading a little over 80mph.

I noticed them a few months back. So I decided to take a closer look and found that it was not actually the camera sitting on top of the gantry that flashed but a camera fitted to the left side of the structure.

Presumably, that side bit is a common flash then... and the "cameras" themselves don't actually have built-in flashes ? I suppose 4 x double flashes may be a little too much if everyone is speeding lol

Those are the new HADECS3 systems, but on some gantrees the older top-mounted HADECS2 also flash and issue tickets. This is a fairly recent occurrence though as they've been flashing for years and people have only started getting caught in the last couple of months.

I have been flashed by the cameras on the side at speed before and have never got a ticket.

Having said that if they are starting to send tickets its going to make life a real pain for me lol

These are the ones on the M25.

On the M1 via the Smart Motorway, the are also over head on every other post.

Since reading that most Smart Motorway cameras are always on, I always stick to 70 even when the signs are not illuminated.

Where did you read that? I've read the exact opposite. I regularly go >70 down the M42 without any kind of trouble.

I would be incredibly surprised if the cameras are always on.

I never speed when the variable speed limit is on but I know people that will do 100 to 110 when the limit is 70 on the m1 and they have not had a ticket through.

Ive driven up and down the M1/M42/M25/M62 LOADS of times recently, when the signs are unlit at speeds that would see me in the papers. I have received nothing so I question every single one of these such threads. They are always full of he said, she said and rumour but not sure I have ever seen solid proof that their is a clearly defined set of circumstances where these work, or don't work outside of if the lights are on.

I was unaware they flash without tickets being issued.

This is the kind of change that should be all over the papers before going live.
