Spelling and the lack of an excuse

Having a spell checker has helped me greatly, I never knew that I misspelled so many words.

It's not very often you see people feel like this, they often get angry and go on the defensive, suggesting ridiculous things like people who care about spelling must not have any friends, making them look a lot worse than the people they're complaining about.

But yeah, a lot of people genuinely aren't aware that they are spelling words incorrectly, and they'll only ever become aware of it unless someone or something (spell checkers) tells them.

Used to be a pedant myself but i grew up, got over myself and realized there are far more important things to worry about.

Its incredibly easy to use a spell checker and most browsers will have them built in, so i don't need to waste my valuable finger skin to pretend im superior to the next guy.

Sure you can learn a lot about the person by their attitude to how they write, like you can from the way they dress or music they like...

Only think i find truly amusing is people typing loose when they mean lose. That blows my mind.

im so tired... i hope i left some spelling mistakes behind.

I get the feeling you wouldn't have been a particularly believable pedant.

Also, what's with the assumption that it has anything to do with superiority?

It's not like people think it makes them a genius because they can use English to an acceptable standard.

Taking the time to spell and punctuate correctly is also about self respect IMHO.

Is it accurate for people to deem the writer of a poorly spelled or punctuated sentence as a bit "dim"? No, but it will happen.

It's about knowing you're ****, or knowing your ****. ** removed ** :D

Having had this debate a few times, I discovered that most people don't mind too much about the occasional error, as none of us is perfect but find it hard not to comment when someone posts gibberish/slang/text speak etc.

I've also found that people that I know who are managers or hirers and firers, simply bin any CV or letter that contains the errors that we're talking about: So, to those who say that it doesn't matter, as long as people can understand; maybe so, on the internet forums but if your laxity spills over into other things, it could cost you dear.

Peace and love. :)
