Hi guys!

Here for reliable OCUK advice about a new netbook. I'm a student, physics postgrad, and looking for a very portable lappy which can handle HD movies and a few old games while travelling, standard wordprocessing etc, Matlab and C++ compilers ideally. Help! Money: £400 ish. I have looked at

Acer 1810 (no Ion, better everything else) £430
HP Mini 311 (Ion-equipped) £300

I have read lots of good things about both. Also, if I get the HP I will be getting Windows 7 (student deal of £30) and another stick of RAM (£40?) which pumps up its price to £370-ish.

Worthwhile getting the Acer then, for the extra £60 over the HP? Or is the Ion really worth it?
Cheers

I will choose acer 1810 with this processor Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor SU7300
(3MB L2 cache, 1.30 GHz, 800MHz FSB), why? because it's core 2 Duo which is better than compare the other one.

I have decided on probably getting the Dell Inspiron 13z, can get it tax free so £495 for Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM and a 512MB nvidia g105m. Looks tasty

He said he can get it tax free, presuming VAT which makes it around £500, they have £110 off at the moment plus claiming the VAT back. I have just ordered a 13z for my wife, the model below that one with Intel graphics.
