q9550 at stock ghz presently
8gb ocz platinum ram
asus rampage formula mobo
corsair hx620w psu

i also find it the noisiest HD ive ever had or heard in a desktop. however the samsung disk utility says its fine :\

Sorry to piggyback off your post but mine doesn't seem right at all...

It's connected to an ICH8 (non R) in AHCI mode.

Any ideas why the drive is underperforming?

You would think so given the burst rate but the drive is configured as sataII and the ICH8 is also sataII. I get exactly the same performance whether running the ICH8 with AHCI enabled and disabled, and the same when running from the JMB363 controller.

i wonder why my random access is so slow :@

erm the noise when reading is a dull click click click. unlike other drives which seems a lot feinter and higher pitch read click...

I would love to know how other people have managed to get average speeds of near to 100MB/s. Am I missing something?

Spec

C2D E6600 @ 3.0Ghz
Ga965p-ds3
4GB PC3200
Windows 7 ultimate 64
and the offending HD103UJ

I've tried the following

ICH8 in IDE legacy, windows driver- same
ICH8 in IDE legacy, intel driver- same
ICH8 in IDE native, windows driver - same
ICH8 in IDE native, intel driver - same
ICH8 AHCI in IDE legacy, windows driver- same
ICH8 AHCI in IDE legacy, intel driver- same
ICH8 AHCI in IDE native, windows driver - same
ICH8 AHCI in IDE native, intel driver - same
JMB363 AHCI, windows driver - same
JMB363 AHCI, JMicron driver - same

That's a lot of OS installs!

It seems whatever I try, it's not exceeding 100MB/s at all, let alone average...

Every disk is different, and 200sx, you have a fairly old chipset there, so it might account for some of it, but the drive looks fine in your benchmark, I really don't see a problem.

k3wt, which hard disk test did you use? The DOS based tests tend to be the most reliable. You can also check the SMART info.

ive checked the 'health' of my drive in HD Tune Pro and it says OK. ive also tried DISABLING AAM but i get an error :(

There isn't a jumper on that drive or another that limits it to SATA1 is there? I had something similar on my rig where 1 of my 1.5tb drives was performing much lower then the other. For me it turned out that I had the SATA1 jumper enabled on my 500gb drive which seemed to be affecting it and the next port. Removed this jumper and all has been fine since.
