'Ola!

We bought me dad a squeezebox for his birthday. It's a brilliant piece of kit, however my dad is a bit of an audiophile, although not an extreme one, and after a couple of hours of listening he noticed that the bass was missing quite a lot from the MP3's, compared to the CD's...Infact the difference was so big, I could tell what it was!

We're now looking at buying an external hard drive and encoding the CD's in something other than 192 MP3. What would you recommend? I'm looking to try and get some ooomph back in the bass, but obviously I would like to try and reduce the music size in some way. I suppose I'm after some kind of middle ground. What would people recommend? The squeezebox will play the following formats: Click Here

Thanks

are you outputting via analogue or digital. If analogue you might want to consider upgrading to the 'transporter', which is supposed to have a much better DAC built into it IIRC.

IMHO there's not a world of difference between 192kbps LAME encoded MP3s and CD quality - only really noticeable if you're looking out for it - so the problem may lie elsewhere (are you using as good a quality interconnect from your CD - Amp as from your squeezebox - Amp?)

FLAC all the way.
I'm now running an SB+ (heavily modded SB3) as my primary music player. I cut all of my CDs using EAC (exact audio copy) to FLAC. Uses a lot more space, but with the cost of hard drives now, who cares.

Are you keeping the SB+ then? I thought after initial listening that you had decided to return it as it was rather inferior to your CPD.

Cool, thanks for that, We'll give Flac a shot! Fini, I very much doubt it is the other kit, It's a musical fidility setup. The cables alone, he uses, cost £100! Even on my very basic stereo with rather poor amp and leads, I can notice the difference.

Out of curiosity, what does an SB+ entail?

The designer for the SB+ popped over a couple of weekends ago after my feedback (now that's what I call customer service). Whilst there, he showed me a unit that was 3 months old. Seems that I'd simply not let the unit I'd bought "burn in". So he agreed to extend the trial period to ensure that I was happy.

As it happens, it's already sounding much better, and is now a match for my Meridian transport. So the SB+ is staying.

To answer the question about what it is. It's an SB3, stipped of it's case. The digital output section is replaced by a higher quality unit and it's been given a high quality power supply.
