SSD AS BOOT DRIVE REGULAR HARD DRIVE FOR STORAGE

Make sure you have only the SSD connected first during install, so all the boot files goes on the boot drive. Then plug in the HDDs after everything is done.

I've seen that mentioned at least twice now, but I haven't seen any real reason why. I just installed my SSD this week and had a SATA drive connected too when I installed Windows.

All my boot files are still on the SSD. None on the SATA drive. Just made sure that the SSD was connected to the first SATA port on the board.

I think it only applies when you create a partition that takes up the full space of the SSD. Windows usually creates two (100MB for the Boot and the rest for the OS) and if you already have a partition there it will try and install the C:\Boot folder on another hard drive.
 
its just to safeguard against windows installing itself or messing up the boot record of any other hard drives,even if you select to install to your new ssd more than likely it will install on another drive thats present,so best to unplug them all except for the drive you want to install to
 
Fair enough. Only time I've seen that sort of thing happening though is in Linux (which royally annoyed me).

With Windows, I just tell it to format the drive in question, then use it, and it automatically puts the 100 mb boot partition on the same drive I'm installing Windows on. YMMV of course ;)
 
Simple question.. I was wondering is it possible to use an SSD drive as the operating system boot up drive and then use regular hard drives for storage.

I remember reading this scenario isn't possible or is it?
Also I understand that this mother board Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-GEN3 comes with on board graphics capabilities as I'm wanting to stream blu ray content to my media av amplifier.

I use a 180GB Intel 330 SSD which has win7 os and FSX and a few add ons. The HDD is used for my steam games, photos, itunes music etc. SSD is fantastic for quick load times. Definetly makes a massive difference.
 
You are right that the SSD has a better access times and a better OS loading times including loading Apps but my Read & Write speed are better than SSD 2 drive and for the price of 40£ I have 480GB space to use for my OS and Apps. I think it is far better than to spend £60 just for a drive that can load your OS and a few more apps + a few games because that how much space you will have left ;)
I am looking at price/performance ;) and I think so far this option is still better ;)
 
with big hdd's in raid you have to have a bigger drive to back everything up ect,if one of those drives fail youve lost all your data,its much easier to keep things simple with a single smaller ssd,its even faster than raiding two hdd's
 
Well folks a lot of replies and I'm happy it is good to know there are people out there willing to help when you really aren't sure if what you are doing is correct. So thanks for all your input..

In terms of benchmarks it may show higher read/write figures. However when it comes down to actually using the system in real-world scenarios, the SSD will always be faster. Read/write speeds alone don't mean a great deal. Even my 3 year old Crucial M225 64GB SSD with 200MB/sec read and 150MB/sec write is still significantly faster for an OS drive than any mechanical hard drive I've used. IOPS and access time seem to make the biggest difference for an OS drive at least :)
