SSD in gaming machine. worth the money?

Me too, I was expecting the loading time to be halved at least, but there's only a couple of seconds in it I'd guess. Whether these game have a fixed minimum loading time or not perhaps?

Anything that's not a game is just insanely quick though it has to be said.
 
well this throws a spanner in the works...

edit - i mean... for a gaming machine ALL there is is fast os boot up, fast game load, and fast map change. if there isnt much of a differnce in map change load times then it only effects the first minute of your gaming..... so not worth >£100 imo....
 
its worth it to have fast boot ups and fast web browsing,games will be alittle quicker loading due to the os/ssd handling most things

its not practical imo just to have an ssd for games,youll see a bigger benefit having your os on it and hdd for your games

you could go 60gb i paid £83 for my corsair gt but prices have come down abit since then

thing is though as i said, this pc will be used exclusively for games. if i wanna browse the web then i tend to do it on the laptop. if people are claiming that they see little benefit from games loading from a ssd then that only leaves quicker boot times as a benift. if thats true about games then there is no way i paying for the ssd just to get a faster boot times....
 
No need for raid really. All my games load quick enough from my 1TB Samsung F3. I don't see the need for them to load any quicker! In multiplayer games I'm always one of the first in the game.
 
Well on Mass Effect 3 with my Crucial M4...the load times in game are 1-2 seconds long....massive improvement over loading on my HDD.

I'd reccommend it, if you can afford it.
 
So it looks like there difference of opinion here. i think ill leave to ssd for now and pick one up later on when ive got some extra money (and the slow price drops dont show any sign of stopping any time soon)
 
For a gaming machine, the extra money on a better graphics card will be far more important.

Yes a SSD can make loading times faster, but the bulk of your gaming experience is handled by your GC and so thefor go for a better Graphics card IMO.

True but the experience is not simply a question of how quickly the game runs, you might be bothered by a mechanical hdd chugging away or the heat/noise of a high end video card. Different games also react differently, when I tried Aion the difference was very big between my mechanical drive and ssd but when I try Diablo 3 I hardly notice the difference.

Overall I'd always recommend a ssd as it improves the whole experience but if I were only focused on the frame rate follow the earlier advice and get a better video card.
 
Yeah I agree....thats why I got a SSD for when Guild Wars 2 comes out, as loading screens in MMO's suck.

Just think its a better idea to get the best GC you can and then get a SSD down the line.

Each to their own though.
 
I run the games I play most off my SSD, when loading into games with friends such as BF3, it is the guys with the SSDs that are loading in first by a fair margin (in my experiences).

If you can go for atleast 128gb (crucial M4) as it is surprising how fast they can fill up.

If however it will take a big chunk out of your budget for say a better GPU then for me, that would be a tougher decision to make.
 
I refuse to own a computer without an SSD now, got a 256gig c300 for my old macbook pro which I now use in my desktop pc and love (well worth the money 2 years ago)

My mac had to have £100 quid spent on it just to have an SSD as day to day usage really really annoyed me without one :(

Gaming is made a lot better with an SSD as just about any game that does a lot of reads from the hard drive is improved massively (quake 4 is the only game that wasn't helped along with one). Day to day computing is much better too ;)
