Just bought an xbox off my m8 today after am unsuccessful attempt at fixing mine, and I was wondering whether it was possible to use an ssd with it?

I'm afraid not.
The hard drives are special firmwared devices, not sure what the score is these days, you used to be able to buy some WD 2.5" drive models that could be flashed etc, but that was about it..

Aah ok then, is it possible to install games onto external hard drives?

you can use USB drives. They have to be partitioned to 16GB, using FAT32 file system and you can only use a certain number of them though: link
