I've had my 128GB Crucial M4 for a while now and have always been happy enough with it's performance but recentlly I'v bought a 256GB Samsung 830 and slotted it into my Dell laptop so I thought I'd compare the speeds using CrystalDiskMark and got the following results....

Crucial M4 (128GB)

Samsung 830 (256GB)

Since I have no clue what any of these numbers mean, can anyone tell me if they stack up OK?? (especially since the Samsung write speeds are double those of the M4!?!?!?) :)

Thanks guys.....

Don't get me wrong, they both seem to fly, it's just the huge difference on the sequential write speed that got me thinking that maybe I'd done something wron during install etc!?!?!

Also, the test seemed to take maybe 8-10 minutes on the M4 but only 3-4 on the Samsung???

There is a big difference.

256GB Samsung 830:
- Sequential Read: 520MB/s
- Sequential Write: 400MB/s

128GB Crucial M4:
- Sequential Read (up to): 550MB/sec (SATA 6Gb/s)
- Sequential Write (up to): 220MB/sec (SATA 6Gb/s)

Here are the Atto benchmark results (with all settings left as-is)

Fair point! I guess I didn't realise the numbers were quite that different!

Sandisk extreme 256 for comparison on AMD chipset

Some readings are a bit lower, some a bit higher. Possibly the chipset (sata III) Seems very quick though.

I believe your motherboard has both Intel and Marvell SATA-III ports; which are you using? The Intel I assume as you're getting good speeds from the Samsung SSD.
