I've just got my new build together, and I'm getting random crashes (screen just goes instantly black, restarts the PC).

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic (on advanced/extensive), no errors found, yet I'll run IBT (everything's at stock, besides the memory which I've bumped the voltage to 1.65V) and it'll regularly freeze for 5-10s before carrying on. Sometimes it'll complete and declare stability, and other times it'll find problems.

I've gone down to 1 stick of RAM and it is still a little unstable - freezing in IBT.

Still getting crashes - not BSODs, but straight restarts.

The only thing I can think of is that the motherboard has issues, or the CPU.

Any ideas?

Oh, and I've reinstalled Windows, updated to the latest BIOS, drivers etc.

System is:

CPU: i7 920 D0
Motherboard: Asus P6X58D-E
GPU: GTX480
Memory: OCZ Gold 3x2GB (at 1066MHz right now)
PSU: Gigabyte Odin 1200W (According to Asus Probe, all the voltages lay within spec)

Temperatures are absolutely fine - it's all watercooled, so the CPU at 100% doesn't go more than 50°C, and idles at 30°C.

I had a similar problem with my second set of OCZ gold last year, I would fail all stability testing IBT & Prime 95 but would pass mem test without problem.

RMA'D the CPU and motherboard these tested ok, I bought some other ram (Patriot) and a new PSU, in the end it was the OCZ Gold giving me grief returned for a refund, Ocuk tested and confirmed they were faulty.

Have just run MemTest x86+. One stick showed up with approaching 100,000 errors when I aborted the test...

After removing that stick, I've run 2 passes of MemTest through it, and showed up as fine (at 1066MHz). Now I've got the CPU at 4GHz and the memory at 1600MHz (2 sticks), passed another MemTest and passed a quick run of IBT. Will run Prime95 later today, but it appears that we have a culprit.

Is OCZ memory really crap? I always hear about OCZ memory failing, and I seem to remember RJK and NathWraith taking the mick out of it on separate occasions. If it's that bad, why does anyone stock it? The failure rate and return rate must be colossal...

just the Gold stuff is crap.

So it would be better named 'brown'?

I'll make a note to avoid in future...

Will have to wait until after Christmas before I can get a new kit, but at least 4GB are working well.

Windows will restart instantly on a BSOD these days, you don't see the screen. There's a setting buried somewhere under right click->my computer->properties.

I did get a BSOD or two as well though? If that's true then that would help explain random restarts - I thought at first it was due to GPU overclocking.
