Standard "trade-in for diesel" decision

I have an 01 Ibiza and it does 55MPG all day long. An 03 will be a PD so about the same or a little better, possibly. The only surprise bill was a DMF for me. Not sure how the 03s fare in this respect.

Don't bother with a tdci at this budget.

I'm not sure I really understand the general consensus here, which seems to be "it's not worth the risk" and "it won't save you much".
Seems you just want a reason (any reason) to get a diesel.

Like others have said... the associated costs of repair 'if' something goes wrong (flywheel, injectors, turbo, etc...) are particyularly high on a diesel which makes it a false economy.

Also, upping the budget somewhat defeats the object. How many miles could you do in your current car with the cash you're saying you could pump into a newer shinier diesel?

I'd also go with the 'better the devil you know' comments - a mate of mine has an 03 mondeo (was bought in great condition with motorway miles on) and has dropped thousands on it for injectors, flywheel, alternator and a water pump.

I wrote my old 1.8 focus off the xmas before last and considered diesels but in the end went for a 1.6 petrol. It's got 80% of the performance of the 1.8 but returns 43-45mpg compared to my 1.8's best of 37mpg. Possibly worth considering if you must change but for now I'd just stick with what you have and run it to moon miles.

When the high pressure diesel system fails, injectors , DMF, etc etc = £££££ ur gonna wish u had a petrol that in comparison is cheap to repair
