Much like the Jedi and the Sith have the Force-driven ability to feel things from a long way off, we’ve all known that Star Wars supremo George Lucas was planning to convert the entire franchise to 3D at some point in the future. He’d dropped heavy hints, and since he rarely passes up a chance to tinker with the movies on a digital level, it was just a matter of when, not if. And now we have a rough date. Well, we have a year: 2012.

While James Cameron’s success with Avatar was a big reason Lucas is pushing ahead with the conversion process, it was also a case that the director wanted to wait until there were enough 3D screens to support a decently wide re-release. Of course, given how many 3D movies are planned for release in that year, it’s entirely possible that the marketplace will again be crowded.

Still, to give the man credit, he’s taking his time with the new versions, personally overseeing the conversion process to get them right. And even though the Blu-Rays are due next year, he’s hoping that by the time The Phantom Menace’s release rolls around in 2012, the 3D home entertainment market will be up and running properly.

While we’re not entirely sure any of the Star Wars series really needs 3D, there are a few scenes we could enjoy seeing with TIE fighters screeching over our heads and some extra depth in those big Hoth landscapes…

But what say you? Does it feel like an event? Or more like Lucas squeezing another few drops out of his legacy?

So, good idea, or is Lucas stringing it out now?

Personally I can't wait for it, I just hope it comes back to the cinema. Lucas is probably making the most of the franchise, but who cares, it's Star Wars. :D

That's as articulate as I can be on that matter.

There is nothing in the last 15 years worth giving Lucas any credit for. Ruined Indy Jones, ruined star wars with 3 bad prequel movies, and now he's grinding out more cash by rehashing everything once again. He will never stop. Not until he is dead from goitre, old rubber neck will continue rehashing the memory of something that was once good to spin a few more dollars.

Maybe it'll look great, but it won't improve the quality of the storyline in e1, e2 and e6.

Just how does one take a 2d source and make it 3d? Won't be proper 3d like avatar, can't be, source is a single cam.

As someone said

Seriously, if they're going to "wait and see how the first one does," well, guess what? It's gonna tank. No one wants to sit through Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones again. Start with Revenge of the Sith...and then the original trilogy. I feel especially sad for the people working on the 3D conversion of the first two movie--they are wasting their lives!!:p

Heh, i think the force is strong enough to make a ton of money reguardless. The only people that suffer are the ones that feel obliged to buy just because it's starwars, and bet on that, half of which won't even half a 3d tele:)

No problem with it myself though, you pays your money, you makes your choices.

I had a 3d television, id be all over it, same with quite a few other films that'd be great to get in 3d.

Maybe when that comes about i could justify the costs in upgrading:)

I think the 3D tech will be pretty good, as they said each movie will take a year to convert. That's a lot quicker than the cheap 3D conversions that we're seeing in other movies, like Clash of the titans - which was really, really bad 3D.

I think it will be a pleasant surprise. Sure Lucas screwed up things in the Special Editions, but he sure knows his thing or two about technology, and I bet he will be pushing of the BEST 3D tech for each movie.

I will probably go see every one of them. I didn't like the prequels much but it's Star Wars and it's not very often that opportunities like this come for movies like these to be put on the big screen again.

Lucas has been 'stringing it out' since the ewoks.

For the time being 3D is a gimmick. It gets people to shell out for a more expensive ticket/dvd/bluray but I don't think it really adds anything to the films it's used in (that being said I've not seen Avatar and I'm sure there are some nature/natural history documentaries that are stunning in 3D).

I could be tempted into seeing the originals in 3D and it'd be great to see them on the big screen. As for the newer films, they're disappointing enough in 2D.
