Stargazing LIVE BBC2 8pm

I found it a little too bitty and diluted for my taste but then the target audience is your average man in the street. The presence of Ross was a complete waste of time and only confirmed what we all think of him. How can you own a few telescopes and know very little about astronomy. I didn’t mind a little humour as a program like this doesn’t need the audience to be bored to death by experts.

Given some its short comings and remembering who this is aimed at I think they’ve made a reasonable attempt at bringing astronomy to the masses. Getting people to go out at night into the garden with or without binoculars/telescopes is no mean feat. We shall see how this pans out over the next two episodes and I for one will be watching them.

Hopefully tonight's episode will be better and provide the info I was actually wanting to see - like how to find your way around the night sky. And show us folk without a telescope what is really out there.

P.S. Those colour photographs of nebulae and stuff which people have taken - is that what they really look like? With such vivid colours? Or have they been enhanced by computer and are just a load of whites and greys?

started off good but got a bit dull half way threw , cant blame any of that on the prof though!

i suppose these types of programs can be a bit hit and miss when they are live.

i agree the profs wonders of the solar system series is great , got the dvd series for christmas , brian cox is just brilliant at what he does , he's like a David Attenborough but in a different field of study

Cox is just fantastic, the show was ok and threw up some interesting facts (like seeing Jupiter and potential to see Uranus and Saturn in the morning), no doubt would have been dire had it not been for him. I could feel him getting more annoyed with Dara as the show went on, which was quite funny. I agree on the Hawaii parts, they were very dull (excluding the lava bit which was quite interesting).

I could listen to Brian ramble on about anything for hours, he has such a succinct and good way of explaining things. Also, I loved the way he owned Dara when talking about gravity :p

I think they have been enhanced, I remember that NASA often enhance images of planets etc with colours

Images can be taken in colour and they can be enhanced by the use of filters and software:

Hubble takes it pictures in shades of black and white and colour is added in the processing stages:

That's fascinating. So they can take different images at different wavelengths and assign arbritary colours to maximise the detail. Sometimes the colours assigned are natural as we would see them, other times they are shifted to provide more detail.

So I guess unless the photographer person states how the photo was made, one will never know whether it's natural or enhanced.

I thought it was an ok watch. A refreshing change from some of the usual trash.

Dara also has a good knowledge on the subject. He has a degree in Quantum something or other doesn't he?

Also, Liz Bonnin cannot do any wrong in my eyes. She's a stunning self confessed geek!

Watching the second episode atm. Finally some actual stuff about how to look at the sky, shown by the guy instructing Ross.

Dara seems to be a third wheel tbh. Each time they've had other professionals on screen, it looks like Dara has been left there twiddling his thumbs while Cox has an exchange with the other guy on screen.

I don't think the comedy and science have mixed to well so far. Neither is bad, as i like both presenters, the two styles of presenting just aren't mingling well. I got the impression Cox was trying hit hardest to bring attention to the scientific stuff, but Dara's 'jovial' personality/style was getting in the way.

Will have to see what the third episode brings.

what an awful show, dont most people know everything their talking about? it seems its pitched at teenagers or those that have never picked up a science book in their lives.
im all for science programmes on tv, especially prime time - but filling it with trash is not the way forward.

The show is aim at people getting outside and seeing the wonders of the universe, the fact is most people are couch potatoes and sit in front of the TV everyday, can't see how your point is valid about it being trash as most people don't know their way around the sky and what to look for, especially if your a beginner. also understanding the mechanics of why the planets are all circular, how to take webcam pictures and photostacking, i myself have a manual mount 8' dob which means taking photos on a 30sec exposure would cause streeking and would be damn impossible to get a picture as you see in magazines.

I'm afraid that most people in the street don't know what they are taking about. If you asked them about the Plough or the Big Dipper, they’d say I don’t know that pub or I haven’t been on that ride. As to orbits their knowledge probably just extends to knowing that we orbit the sun. The last time most of them looked at a science book was just before they did their GCSE exams. The program is aimed at the great British public and is a very reasonable attempt at bringing astronomy to the masses. For me it works very well.

Coxy never did properly explain why the planets all orbit in the same direction because that Irish goon interrupted him. Why do they? And what determined the distances of those orbits?
