It depresses me. We are living in the wrong age and will never be able to see any of these wonders close-up, in real-time.

EDIT: Thanks for the link to Stellarium. Never heard of that before. Going outside in a mo with my laptop to see what I can find.

Oh just remembered another good one. Worldwide Telescope by Microsoft Research. Bit like Google Maps for the sky.

WWT is a stunning bit of free software for PC, Mac and web client (silverlight?), demo below. Star Walk (for iPhone and iPad) is astonishingly good for being able to hold it up to the sky and get an augmented reality effect displaying exactly what it is you're looking at as if you're looking through the iPad/iPhone - incredibly clever.
