Whats everyone's opinions on the state of enjoyment they get from the current crop of consoles?

I feel like my Nintendo switch has immersed me and allows me to LOVE specific games; Odyssey, BOTW, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Smash Bros.

I haven't had the same love with my PS4 games. I'm pending playing GOW/Horizon as I've missed out a lot of notable PS4 games but they're just missing something. For PSVR, its the total opposite. RE7 especially has just made me a total PSVR/PS4 Pro fanboy.

Similarly my Oculus Rift has given me some AMAZING experiences, but say playing Witcher 3 on PC at 4k.. its been really really good; but I'm not sure if its hit the magic that I experienced on PSVR and the Switch.

TLDR:
Basically my switch, and VR gaming seem to be offering more enjoyable experiences than most of my PC/PS4 Pro gaming experiences, is it just bad luck with the games I'm picking or has anyone else experienced this too?

I spend most of my time on my PS4, Playstation VR and Nintendo switch. I also picked up a cheap Nintendo Wii which I've been spending quite a bit of time playing. For me it's basically been the year I've gotten into VR!

I haven't played PC or Xbox one much this year at all. Next year I plan on getting an Oculus Quest at launch. If the Playstation 5 is released I'll grab that as well.

Given my recent experiences I've no interest in upgrading my PC or buying another Xbox.

Have you tried PC VR? Its way better than PSVR and the reason I switch on my PC.

Room scale and god like tracking make the PSVR look pre-historic.

The Switch is the real sleeper for me. Its managed to suck from me around 120h BOTW, 60h Odyssey [and probably another 60 as i lost my save data], 80 XC2 and I think Smash bros I'm at around 30h [on my console, probably another 10 on my friends when we do multiplayer at work] and I can honestly say no game has ever felt like a chore. This whole portable thing makes even grindy tasks.. well not grindy. I know on XC2 there is some crap mini game which i could not play on my TV, but playing it on the toilet was fine.

***The Quest will be a game changer but I'm hesitant to invest in it because of the price of the games. I'm not sure if double dipping will be entirely worth it. Invariably I'll probably get it just so that I can go into a field somewhere and destroy at superhot.
The quest does have the potential to give us some AMAZING games which can have some crazy room requirements of say 10x10m. The issue is I don't think dev support will be there.
I'll still get a quest for VR porn probably.

My Switch has pretty much eclipsed everything else. I felt I'd gone back a generation using PSVR, maybe I'll invest in it next gen if they can actually make it decent looking.

I have a Lenovo WMR headset (which I just bought in the black friday sales) and whilst the tracking is superb and optics are decent enough I've just not been finding it a very smooth experience. Lots of the games seem to have control scheme issues and performance seems to be all over the shop. With PSVR and the Ocluus Go I owned briefly everything worked smoothly out of the box as you'd expect I guess. The 6DOF motion tracking on the PSVR is borderline broken though unfortunately thanks to them re-using that single camera.

I suspect the cause of my PC VR woes is the WMR integration into steam VR. I've no doubt the experience would be smoother with a Vive/Rift. I only really bought the WMR headset as it was cheap so I didn't expect too much from it. I'll probably sell it when the Oculus Quest is released.

The other issue is that my PC is currently in the smallest room in the house so I only have a 2x2m area which isn't ideal for many games. I suspect many will have this same problem as PC's/Offices tend to always end up in the smallest room in the house.

That's part of the reason I like the promise of the Oculus Quest as being able to pick it up and walk into a larger room (where there's no fear or hitting things or walking into walls) would be much better. As much as a loathe Facebook/Oculus they seem to be about the only company (other than Sony) who are actually investing in the development of VR and moving things forward. As you said being able to play something like Superhot, Space Pirate trainer, etc in a large room scale area would be amazing.

I share your concern over the price of the games as Oculus will effectively have absolute control over what they charge but I'd be willing to pay a slight premium over the Steam versions just for the portability of the Oculus Quest and the ease of setup. I never game on my PC much these days and really don't want to be in a position where I'm upgrading it purely for VR!
