I'm headed to Dallas next year for the eclipse and staying about 5 days and car hire looks to be £100+ per day. I'm wondering if taxis and Uber are going to be cheaper. Your experiences would be most welcome.

it's not much of a tourist city really.

Duration-wise I want to get over jet lag before the eclipse.

I was caught out by this when I first went the US. It's not like the UK at all. You need a car to travel from the far side of the car park to the supermarket doors. I mean everything is on a different scale and massively spread out. You use transport all the time. A car is highly advised.

Noted.

Should I hire the car at the airport, or wait until the next day, when I've had a good night's sleep? Driving unfamiliar roads in an unfamiliar country, possibly at night, when just off a plane seems like a recipe for disaster.

Just to update the thread, I used a taxi to get from the airport to the hotel and got ripped off and then took Uber everywhere else. The cost was much the same as hiring a car but without any of the hassle.
