I currently have a pair of Gale silver monitors powered by the zone2 of my Onkyo 608 amp.

I am looking to get a dedicated stereo amp to power them instead. I don't want to spend too much, under £150 if possible.

It will be used for my PC connected to an Asus Essence STX soundcard, would the Cambridge Audio Topaz AM1 be powerful enough? or should I be looking at more powerful amps.

The AM1 should drive the Gales fine. That have a pretty high sensitivity of 88dB, which means the amp can drive them louder. Also they are 6ohm so that should allow the amp to give out slightly more than it's rated 20w @ 8 ohms. The AM5 has a higher wattage output of 25w @ 8 ohm, depends how loud you want the speakers to go. Both are decent entry level amps, but you can get better if you buy 2nd hand. I bought an Audiolab 8000A for just under £100. It's old now, but it's still a great amp, and still sounds fantastic. It can divide opinion, some love it, some think it's too dry and clinical, depends on ones tastes. Not saying you should look at getting an Audiolab, but you can get can a considerably more costly amp for around £100. I've seen plenty of good Marantz, Denon, NAD, CA etc, amps go for around the £100 mark. Depends if you want to buy new, or are willing to go 2nd hand.

I've seen CA A1's and the like at cash convertors for £20-£30 before up here :)
for the money that'd be a fantastic buy.

I bought mine on the MM with a pair of gale mini monitors for iirc £50, one fo the best budget upgrades I've made tbh

I never thought of cash converters. I'll go have a look. Cheers.

Richer sounds are usually good for audio bargains, lots of discounted end of line stuff.

Year that's where I saw the Topaz. I generally buy all my AV stuff from them because their warranty and service is second to none in my experience.

I bought a Cambridge Audio Topaz AM5 from RS this afternoon. Sounds great and I am well pleased. Got them to discount it down to £99 so saved myself £20 as well.
