Still on the lookout for a replacement. Fast Saloon 6k

Edit -

I've said my piece, and you've said yours. I hope the OP finds a car he's happy with.

// Double edit - this was almost as bad as my 'spec me a spoiler / wing thread for the 5'. Yikes

MrLoL - this isn't working pal. You are not going to find anything that is interesting, semi fast and meets your other desires to drive that won't throw up huge bills.

Slow and reliable = low costs.
Fast and little less reliable = higher costs.

Just buy a standard vectra, avensis or 318i.

I imagine the problem with the CTR is it's lack of back doors though, I don't have kids myself but I am aware of how much of a pain in the rear it is trying to get small children in and out of a car that does not have back doors. I know a lot of people hugely over do this little bit of practical convenience and get a 7 seat bus or something, which you really don't need for a couple of children, a 4 door saloon/hatch would suite fine 9 times out of 10, but with children, back doors really aren’t something I would want to give up.

I have not experienced it myself as I am childless, but how is it difficult to get a kid into the back of a car unless he is struggling, in which case, why are you kidnapping a kid?

Where's Howard :D

Hi :D

It's all true though. I'd like a nice 6/8 cyl BMW as a daily but at the moment I couldn't really afford/justify the cost of running one, and I certainly wouldn't want to bodge my way through owning one either, that'd just end in tears. So I am sticking with what I've got for now - The Honda which is in good nick, does me perfectly for daily duties and doesn't give me any grief and the MX5 which is hilarious fun and cheap to run as a toy. Well, it would be cheap to run if you didn't spend hundreds on upgrading it  but hey, I enjoy it :D and am in a better position to budget for 'upgrades' at the moment than I am for a sudden £1500 repair :)

I can do a good chunk of the work on my current cars myself but there's plenty of things I don't/wouldn't feel comfortable with - timing belt changes, clutch/gearbox etc, so I'd get the work done at an indy

I think you'd have to experience it to understand - certainly in the case of a baby/toddler, clambering over the front seats in a 3 door car to get them seated and strapped can be a royal faff

I like that :D

Its a royal PITA getting a small child in the back of a small 3 door. Our first car seat didn't even fit in the back of the GTIR I had - hence why that had to go. You have to get them in without hitting thier head on the roof (failed a number of times here but don't worry, they bounce well). Then having to reach in to do the belts. Its made worse when they are in mid-tantrum.

If you have a child and money is a bit tight the very last thing you should waste money on is cars. Been there, done that and not about to repeat it.

Without having trawled the thread, how about a Mazda 6 MPS or an Accord Type-R? Both may be a bit old for your liking though.

Also, thoughts on a Lexus IS200?

That's actually a good shout. Lovely engine. Not hugely quick but a lovely noise and so smooth. Good to drive. Not expensive to run if you don't go for a Sport model with 18" wheels :p

Which, inevitably he would :p

When can i get a ride in your MX-5 with new shiney bits Howard? ;)

I was having a think about this, really unable to come up with anything better than an ST220, but then it occurred to me, that almost forgotten car, the Subaru Forester Turbo? very good performance, very practical and doesn't cost the same to insure as an Impreza, or attract all the wrong kind of attention. They come with 16 or 17" wheels too, so not massively expensive to shoe and are frighteningly reliable from what I have read.
