Still waiting for your 5800 series? Read this.

Yes, 2x 5770 is comparable to a 5870, but what if you don't yet have a crossfire board? Also, there's nowhere to upgrade from there. Patience is a virtue. I understand you're trying to justify your purchase, and that's cool, but it's not for everyone.

I have never bought into the 'i can add another later' mantra. I could buy a second 4870 but would rather sell it and put that money to new tech.

I thought this was going to be about why there was no 5800's around (which we already know, they held onto them for the 5970's) :p

These are cracking cards in Xfire, and an absolute bargain. :)

So did i actually. :p

I am going down the X-fired 5770 route as well. Seems like a good move to me.

I wish i had enough PSU power to go X-Fire 5770, but I cant upgrade my PSU without needing a new case as well, or I can keep the existing case/PSU and put a 5850 in, if they ever manufacture enough of them!

Gaaaah :(

Still happy with my overclocked 5850 for £195. £35 cheaper than two 5770 in xfire and at more than 5870 speeds, faster as well.

The 5770 in xfire are very good though if you can't get a 5850 for £200.

And I do fancy dropping a cheaper 2nd 5850 later next year.

Wasn't it the increased reliability of the performance of a single GPU card like the 5870 that drew many people to that card in the first place (and allowed it to beat the GTX 295 in several games where multi GPU support was lacking)?

Furthermore, correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't you need an X58 platform to get the most out of your crossfired cards?

X58 vs P55 or 2x16 vs 2x8, this has been tested many times on cards way more bandwidth hungry than the 5770 and basically you get ~ 4% or close difference.
So, you are correct, but only just.

5770s OC too you know.

You can get 2x 4770s for £116 too which is the best bang for buck ATM IMO.

True but it's a close call especially if you can find a 5850 for £200.

both overclocked I reckon it would be a dead heat, the 5850 winning in some, the 5770 x 2 in others.

So not worth the small extra for the 5770's but a valid alternative if you can't find a 5850 but not better since you are reliant on xfire which is normally the first thing that is bust in a new game until it's fixed with a driver release.

Essentially the OP is just offering up alternatives, and he makes a very valid pioint, you can't get 5850's at the mo, but you can get 5770's. The benchies put the Xfire setup in the lead over the 5850, so highlighting this alternative may well float peoples boat. Obviously we are all aware of the caveats, single GPU vs dual, main board bandwidth etc but for some, given this information, this will be their favoured setup.
