Just about to order a new setup for a mate of mine...

He wants something quiet.

Is the X1800 XT stock cooler loud at all?

How loud would you say it was?

Cheers.

I dont have one, but i've read a lot of posts on here comparing it to a hair dryer. I'm buying one soon, but i've got a VF900 to sit on it :)

i guess if you want a silent system its not the best card but its realy not that bad. the only time i hear mine is in games, when i have my speakers on realy low. if its to loud for your mate he can always get a VF900.

It's not a hair dryer. It spins up to full speed for about 3 seconds when you boot up, and at that speed it's horrible, but it then spins down to a very quiet minimum speed. In gaming it'll spin up a bit more, but it's still pretty quiet, quieter than amd/intel stock CPU coolers, and quieter than a case fan running full speed.

If you've got a very quiet case with a quiet 3rd party CPU cooler, and case fans slowed down to a minimum with a fan controller, then you will hear the X1800 XT fan over the other fans in your PC during gaming, as I do, but it's still not loud.

Overclocking, since it generates more heat, forces the fan speed higher during gaming and will result in a little more noise, so bare that in mind.

VF900 will sort out any noise btw, but may void your warranty.

7900 GT is a nice card, till it breaks :D

I wouldn't rule the ATI's out...you can always get the V900 which is quiet. If the ATI's are faster/cheaper even after the V900 add on cooler. Seems a lot better as can't get it above 80 (did with stock)

ATI at idle is fine, just for heavy gaming (fear etc) a little bit loud, but if the case is a few feet away and speakers are loud enough it'll drown it out.

X1800 XT is much better value than 7900 GT, and less likely to break. I've also heard people say the 7900 GT stock cooler isn't particularly quiet.

Very true. The X1800XT is way better value for money, it's faster with better image quality and the stock cooler isn't even that loud.

Keep in mind also that the 7900GT has a 5% (or one-in-twenty) failure rate, and that its stock cooler isn't silent either. I would go for an X1800XT + VF900 or an HIS X1900GT IceQ 3.

Go for the 7900 GT. :)

Bet that suprised you, you can leave the thread now seen as i knew you would just pop in to check what i posted, expecting a cut and paste weren't you, shame i didn't oblige. ;)

7900 GT ordered.

X1800 XT sacked it as the 7900 GT is a better card overall, simple as that basically.

Plus Ive got some SLi drivers on here somewhere iirc so I think another 7900 GT will be added soon by my mate anyway.

How so? Was choosing between the 7900GT and the X1800XT myself last week, and from everything I saw, the 1800XT was the better card + cheaper.

7900GT is generally regarded as the noisier one (at idle) too. Not really sure where you got your info from.

X1800XT is the faster and better overall card

Especially with the high failure rate of the 7900's, your taking a gamble

But X1800XT stock cooler certainly isnt quiet so you made the right decision in that sense

I've had an x1800xt for a couple of months now. I would never describe it as loud, except from boot but that lasts all of about 3 seconds.

What I would say I notice is the change in note when it does spin slightly faster in games, it's a really stange effect, to me anyway.

The 7900gt is a great card too though, I wouldn't say it's the better card overall because then you are encompassing IQ and features and the XT has better filtering, scales better with AA (I believe) and can do some things that the 7900gt just cannot.

I think with either card you cannot go wrong but considering you appear to have an SLI capable board I wonder why you asked the question?

regards,
J.
