So Heres the dilema

My sister moved to Canada last year and has her Canon EOS 20D camera with her that cost the best part of £1700 2 or 3 years ago.

Someone broke into her house and stole that and her crappy laptop.

She was going round the pawn shops in Vancouver and found the camera!

Now the cops wont let her have it back until she can prove that its hers. We no longer have the box but do have all the manuals, software and a sheet which basically has a Canon Product number and bar code.

Does anyone know if this number is specific to her camera or just that canon product?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how she may prove its hers?

Thanks

If it's the camera serial number then you can prove it's yours, I think products number probably means serial number of the camera.

The Canon 20D was launched at £1200, if the kit lens was attached then add another £100.
The only number that will identify the product is the serial number which is located on the camera body itself.

I don't know about the 20D, but my 350D writes the cameras serial number into the EXIF data of each photo i take. It might be worth checking some of her photos to see if its there.

A number is recorded in the EXIF info but it changes randomly and is different to the actual camera serial number.

Mine isnt. In Adobe Lightroom it displays in the metadata my cameras serial on every image that is identical to the serial number wrote on the bottom of my 30D.

Same here on my 400D

The camera, 3 lenses (no idea which ones...im into computers no cameras), light meter and 2 x 2gb XD cards were stolen so i guess its worth a fair amount. It was in a big camera box.

I dont have any serie number. I have the warrenty, the manula, a bunch of other stuff. But nothing specific to her camera.

The XD cards have been wiped but ive advised her to buy back one of the cards and use this prog http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/ to recover some of the files.

I have photos of her using the camera.

Personnaly i think shes screwed, but its worth a shot.

EDIT - She just remembered she registered the camera at Canon.com so shes gonna try and get the info from that

Not to question your sisters know how but is she aware of been able to write her name into the cameras system information via Canon software.

Other than that she is going to need to know the cameras serial number.

I dont think she knew this. Ill email her and ask

have you checked the exif data from one of her pictures for the presence of the serial number, that would be my first option rather than trying to contact canon??

Just to let you all know that she went into the Pawn shop with her laptop, a card reader and the cops.

The guy had left the deleted card in the camera and she managed to restore all her photos in from of the cops using one of those recover programs.

The guy crapped himself and gave her everything back.

All worked out in the end!

Great she got it back. After reading this I think I will copy all the serials from my inexpensive gear.
