The money is irrelevant though. They could be worth $50. The fact they denied to even having the Lego and even holding onto them is just flat out wrong. They don't own the Lego it is on sale and return. They give back the dude the Lego then chase it up with the previous owners if there is any discrepancy with regards to money. As a company you don't just keep something that doesn't belong to you.
You're right that the way this should have ended is with the new franchise owners reviewing the contract, giving the man back his unsold lego and paying him his cut for what had been sold. hell they could have re-negotiated to keep the contract going and just gotten free profit from selling stock they didn't even have to buy.
My meaning was that assuming either the new or the old store owners did steal the Lego, looking from the corporate franchise headquarters perspective, where the view is they aren't 100% responsible for what their individual franchisee's have in the shop they've definitely chosen the wrong path.
The thing to do in that situation is go "Ok, we'll review this and if the contract with the previous owner is legit we'll pay you what you're owed out of our massive corporate pockets" then deal with the individual store on the quiet.
That way they can handwave any and all criticism of their franchise by saying "whoops, looks like that guy who bought the store was a wrong 'un but don't worry we made sure the sweet old man got his money".
Even Elon "my heart goes out to you" Musk knows that even when you've no obligation making a token gesture in a crisis is a great way to try and buy goodwill. certainly when the alternative is nosediving their franchises reputation so hard into the ground we're here in the UK talking about the aftershock it's the most profitable decision.
I'll admit that the corporate owners have come across a lot better in coffee's video than anywhere else I've seen them speaking, although the fact that this is yet another version of events that's being told will make for some fiery dialogue when the lawyers get to grill people on the stand.
