why,

because across the irish sea, or just down the m1 if you live in northern ireland, the southern irish are being shafted harder and faster than you can even imagine!

current tax system is based on cc, going from 200 odd euro for a 1.1 to €1,491 euro for anything over 3.2 i.e. my m3 :(

cars registered from new after 1 july 08 will be based on a co2 system, so bmw 520 with ed good, 150 euro per year, new m3 bad 2k per year.

All this in addition to the lovely registration tax we pay, for example i imported my o2 m3 from the north, paid £17k stg for it and then for the privilege to legall drive it around on roads no further than 50 miles from where i bought it, i paid another €9,000 to over government.

So stop moaning :p:D

But you've known about that for ages, it's been the case since before you bought your car. You didnt buy a car taxed at £185 a year and then suddenly it went up to a grand after you'd bought it, did you?

Heh, move? :p

Seriously though, ouch. It's been like that for a while hasn't it? Do people just accept it? I never hear anybody moaning about it bar a couple of members on here.

doesnt make it easier, whats the higher rate going to be in uk?

£440. Large percentage increases are always more difficult than existing high cost - the Irish car industry is presumably geared around the high taxation costs and it's been a consideration in every car purchase made over there.

Whereas until 2 months ago there was no indication that a car you've bought 5 years ago which costs £210 a year to tax will cost double that from next year.

To be honest Fox, the rates jumped hugely for existing large engined cars - I think it went up by nearly 200euro. Considering that they will do the same again in a couple of years it's a really slap in the face.

£200 - £400

mine has gone from €1343 to 1491

regardless of whether i knew id have to pay it or not it still stings like a slap from a wet kipper :p

Mine shot up from £140 to £145 between getting my reminder about 2 weeks ago and me paying it on saturday :(

;)

Is insurance not cheaper? and petrol..

Insurance is generally about twice as much. Petrol/diesel is cheaper yes, but I wouldn't say a huge amount - diesel is generally about 1.25 here (about 94p/litre).

Factor in the fact that we have to pay about 40% more than you guys to buy the cars in the first place (and used cars) it also hurts.

fuel is the only thing cheaper,

insurance cheaper..........., doubt it, especially given the rarity of performance cars because of the initial cost (new m3 is about €115 - €120k here) and high road tax

Cyrus, I'm just about to move over to Dublin. You have any advice on importing cars? I have to admit I can't believe how much VRT is!!! Currently looking at Mk5 Golf GTI or maybe a 330ci, VRT is looking to be at least 7000euro!

UK, Hampshire. Looking at probably moving into Malahide since am gonna be based at the airport. There no way of keeping it on UK plates?

if you have owned the car for 6 months in the uk (you will have to prove all this btw) you can re register it for free, cant sell it for 12 months after that tho

customs have become very strong on foreign plates lately, if you move over here and drive on english plates itll be impounded eventually :(

oh malahide is nice BTW
