Strange ebay seller on steam?

I wouldn't touch it - if you log in Steam will have your IP and if he reports anything bang - there goes your own Steam account (if you have one.)

Not worth the risk.

Steam wouldn't ban another account just because its been used on the same IP as another which they've banned, plenty of people use steam on public computers, uni networks or simply have an idiot sibling who cheated/phished on his own account.

Still no point in touching it, first against the eula so valve could just swing the ban hammer and that's it, even if the seller has honest intentions and second there's nothing stopping the guy from getting his account back; verified email address that you can't change or he could just contact steam support with proof of purchase from MW2, store receipt or the card he used to buy it online (he could be sending you any old box).

Ok, so in a nutshell, what should I do? Try and get a refund? :s

i would try to get the refund, it could be a lot more hassle than its worth to be honest.
as mentioned, the account might be stolen, used for hacking on the game (whichis bannable) and if he was the original owner of the account, all he has to do is email valve saying hes lost control on his account or use his secret answer etc to get the account back and also pocket you cash.

in short, get your money back and use the cash to buy it elsewhere.
you can buy codes for MW2 that you have to use on a steam account, which you can make and use with your own details. just make sure its the code youre buying and not an account. and as also mentioned above, the discs are worthless as its all through steam. sorry for massive post!

If he sends you the disc/case/key etc, then you have more swing with valve.

Yes, he could claim you "hacked" his account but it is unlikely you would "hack" his account AND have the product case with manual/key as well.

Email Valve saying you just purchased the game and it wont activate.

Send them a scan of the manual/cd-key.

You will get the game on your account, the other account will likely be disabled but who cares, the seller knew what he was doing and so do you :)

Seems a smart seller to me who just registered that single game to the account for this exact eventuality.

He gave you the ID details so you could play immediately if you wanted before receiving the disc/manual and contacting Valve.

I have used Steam a LOT and never known them to ask for a receipt in these circumstances so I do not foresee it being a problem.

It "could" have been a store who left the manual/box on display and someone took the key. Valve will not punish you for that, well, not from my experiences. If you can prove ownership, your golden.

They normally ask you write the support ticket number on the manual/cd-key so this can prove who you are.

Just make sure there are no VAC bans.

Just because it is Steam, it does not automatically mean it is "dodgy" with any reason to panic. If the seller seems legit with good rep, why not. Sure, it maybe against the EULA but not the crime of the century is it.

Yeah he told me it was just this game on that acccount,

He emailed me this:

Hi,
just to confirm,it will work for you.
I just deleted the local content from my system
and steam stated MW2 will stay in the games
library, but will need to be redownloaded.

What does he mean by this?

It means he has deleted it from his PC and is inviting you to use his account to load it on to yours. If this is the only game on the account I would change the account details so it becomes yours.
I wouldn't buy anything second hand Steam related in future however.

ive heard of this happeneing where guys create a steam account, buy a game which is on offer and tie it to that account then sell the account on ebay etc.

I dont think this sounds like a guy who will scream hes been hacked ina few days, i imagine this is the only game tied to that account, may even have been a gift game and hes makin a few quid.

Always wise to avoid these kind of things but this guy may just be one of the nice ones.

The first option on the first menu bar in steam is change user, so this must happen regular with people with more than one account on the same PC.

I think you'll be fine, if you already have a steam account, just use that for future purchases and just switch to the new account to play your new game, its a bit of hassle and if he didn't describe this in the advert then I wouldn't leave positive feedback no matter how freindly or how many emails hes sending.

However:

Note:

We do not accept receipts from online auction websites or used software vendors. If you do not provide a valid purchase receipt, Valve will not be able to transfer the CD Key.

So that wouldn't be possible in this case.

Could be perfectly OK.

If you set up a new Steam (or whatever) account for every game you buy (that's bought as hardcopy in a store), you'll be able to sell that on without problems.

Seems a perfectly sensible thing to do to circumvent that pesky second-hand market restriction nowadays.

Some of us like steam for the convenience of just being able to launch our games straight away. No bothering with disks, no need to remember multiple usernames and passwords (a different username and password for every game???), etc. I keep most of my games installed all the time, so that I can play them whenever I want.
I do like to buy games second hand, but I'd never buy a steam game unless I could add it to my existing steam account.
If this seller didn't announce he was selling a steam account with the game, I'd feel cheated, and would certainly expect a full refund.
