This morning as I was pulling into work, I noticed a wierd noise as I pulled into the car park, it started as a faint vibration sound, barely noticable, but on the way back from work it became pretty bad, and quite loud.

The actual noise occurs around idle. When sitting in traffic, in no gear, it'll be making the noise, adding a bit of throttle made it a bit louder, and after a certain engine speed stops, but comes back when the engine speed drops.

It'll also go away as soon as you engage the clutch in a gear, when you pull away, but when you go to change gear, it makes the sound again.

I had a poke around the engine bay when I got home, and couldn't pinpoint the exact source of it, at a guess it could be the exaust, and hopefully nothing too serious, perhaps it's gotten loose around a bracket.

I'm paranoid it's something serious, but I'm hoping it's just something loose around the bay. If anybody has any ideas / etc, please let me know.

Cheers,

Dave

Sure its not the clutch pressure plate or the power transfer strap things.

Either that or its the baby thats powers your car trying to escape!

Weather was clearer, and had a look underneath the car. From what I could tell, the exhaust connection under the car, one of the bolts was nearly falling out, as if it has lost a nut, so I'm hoping it's just that.

I've got a similar problem in my Golf.

When idling, there's a humming noise coming from the engine bay area. A normal engine idling should sound like "vrooooooooooom" continuously, but my engine has this wierd noise on top of it that goes "hmm... hmm... hmm... hmm..." continuously.

Anyone got any ideas? I've got a three year warrenty, so I'm going to take it to the dealer tomorrow, and get them to check it out whilst they regas my aircon.
