Strange Router/Line Issue

My folks in law have AOL's GOLD service and after discovering that they were still on 0.5MB (meant to have already been on 1MB with the gold) they heard that they would soon (1st April onwards) be getting 2MB. AOL appologised for the original upgrade never happening and they would regrade manually to new speed of 2MB, which would happen in a few days. It happened on Tuesday 3rd 7pm apparently.

Since then thier Router (Linksys WAG354G) syncs at 2mb but cannot connect to the internet/aol. (DSL light is green/Internet light is red) After many phone calls to AOL about the issue we ended up reinstalling the Voyager 105 Modem which allows them to use AOL with no issues. However using the modem tests as recomened by AOL i got 676 (line busy) and 678 (remote computer failed to respond) error issues. But still the Modem connects to AOL,Surfs the internet etc no issues.

AOL say it is an issue with the router and as it is a no "aol techy support" router they cannot help. They refuse to accept that there is a line issue.

To prove the point, tonight i took thier Router home, disconnected my Netgear Router and pluged thier LinkSys one in it's place. Without changing ANY settings it worked no bother at all with my wired PC!!
(I am with AOL Platinum btw)

Any idea at guys?

If it works with a modem and synchs up (since the "DSL light" turns green), and it's highly unlikely it's a line issue.
Though I'm confused with this bit:

We ended up reinstalling the Voyager 105 Modem which allows them to use AOL with no issues. However using the modem tests as recomened by AOL i got 676 (line busy) and 678 (remote computer failed to respond) error issues.

Does it work or doesn't it?

Yes this IS the weird thing..

Using the AOL software it connects through the old modem no probs, the bt voyager 105.

Yet using the diagnoistics that is part of the modem software it fails with thoose errors.

Try sticking the Router in place of the Voyager and it fails to connect. Try it on another AOL Broadband line it works fine with no change to the settings..

I would just leave the Voyager in place but they also have a laptop that uses wireless for internet/printing etc.

I have only had a router for a few weeks now after upgrading from a BT Voyager 100 modem so I don't know much about them but have you by any chance enabled LAN in the BIOS?

When I originally had this motherboard a few years ago, I must have disabled it and when I attempted to get my router working XP couldn't 'see' it but after enabling it in the BIOS it works perfectly now.

If you have already checked this and LAN is already enabled then just ignore this reply as it is probably a daft question anyway :o

Don't think i need to check that as it (Router) was working fine before the speed regrade. and i can see the router setting pages fine still.

Does the router connect to bt_test@startup_domain or the BT Speedtest (FAQ)?

I have not specifically tried that but thats what i thought the BT Voyager Diagnostic tests were bascially doing with the modem?
I'll try to do this with the router but where does bt_test@startup_domain info go?

Yeah the MTU is at 1400, still pretty much works without it at 1400 just no secure pages/ebay etc tho. :p

I did change the filters around a few times when i diconnected all thier phones/sky but they all could be knackard i will take one of my own over next time to see. Would the Voyager still be able to connect to AOL with a knackard filter..?

Well this is what i can't understand. With no changes to the cabling/filters the Voyager connects but the Linksys doesn't. Try the router on another AOL Broadband line it works no setting changes.. very bizarre.

Decided to take my DG834G over to check to if this worked. Nope and even being talked through over the phone with a "level 2" aol tech this did not resolve it very much to her surprise (up untill then they refused that it was a line/aol fault) now they are investigating it. It seems AOL has requested an engineer to visit the house even though a line check by both BT and myself(online) comes up ok.

It was coming up with LCP down/CHaP auth failed. They thought that was a password issue but after reseting it twice it was obviously not.
Any BT engineers here that would now why a regrade would cause this issue?

BTW Filters were all replaced for this test.

Dont know if this helps, but when my line speed was increased from 1mb to 2mb, I had loads of line sync problems. After loads of head scratching an trying different things, I found that the line attenuation and line noise were way high. I changed my passive line filters for active ones and this cured the problem.

What did you get with bt_test@startup_domain with the DG834 (if you tried it)?

Totally forgot to try this will do it next time i'm over

I know mine are but not sure if thiers are.
I'm sure i checked this when i bought them, they are BT approved and i thought BT aproved were only active.

Unfotunatly the AOL version of the Voyager driver doesn't include the screen for stats for some reason. The stats from the Linksys

DSL Status : Up
DSL Modulation Mode : GDMT
DSL Path Mode : FAST
Downstream Rate : 2272 Kbps
Upstream Rate : 288 Kbps
Downstream Margin : 30 db
Upstream Margin : 29 db
Downstream Line Attenuation : 27
Upstream Line Attenuation : 13
Downstream Transmit Power : 0
Upstream Transmit Power : 0

It isn't connected at all. It sees the the 2mb line but will not log onto it. the "dsl" light is green but the "internet" light is red.
