Hey all,

Was wondering if you can offer some advice. Basically there are 3 of us students going into our 2nd year this september. 2 of us (including myself) have passed the first year and the remaining girl has failed one module. She has to resit it at the end of this month in order to get into the second year. We have been looking for properties, well I have been looking for properties as I live near the University (about a 20 minute drive).

Now, I like the idea of living close to the University also I'd like my space from the parents. My mum drives me entirely up the wall. But, is it still worth spending around £70 a week on accommodation as well as other things (£30 for bills and what not) to move out?

At the moment I have around £3,000 saved plus my student loan of £3,700 which I am hoping will cover me for the year. Am relying on the £3K to make the most of it before I start my placement.

Do you reckon I should stay at home? My girlfriend comes down to visit once in a while and sometimes she doesn't have a place to stay.

I don't know. Just fed up of searching for properties which are expensive and suck.

Yep, definitely definitely definitely keep looking, own place rocks :)

Bear in mind that going from home to stooodent accomodation you're probably going to be looking at somewhere not half as nice, and with less space, and with more shared facilities. But having your own room is awesome, weigh it up! :D

Im in my second year as well however im of to do part of my course in the states , but if i was in your position id stick with halls, its a lot less hassle and not to mention youll have bills like internet ect.

halls 4tw imo :)

Totally depends on the type of person you are and how you are with your parents.

If you have enough friends and your happy to crash on their floor (and your parents are too) once in a while after a sesh then i'd say stay at home, you won't miss much in your second year as opposed to halls.

The fact that your having doubts isn't a good sign. You know yourself and the situation best though and if it means you'll lose friends and not make the effort to go out then i'd say get a room and make sure you have some fun.

I'm going into my second year as well and I've decided that I'd rather move into a flat rather than share a house with mates.

I was paying £82 p/w for uni accomodation, which was quite frankly shocking. The bathroom was ENTIRELY coated in beige plastic, even the floor was plastic. The shower was so close to the toilet that I could probably take a dump and shower at the same time :p

For my second year though, I'm moving into a new-build apartment block which was created for students. They're pretty much giving me my own fully fitted apartment/flat with Sky TV, fully furnished, super-fast Broadband, and security camera which you can tune into the TV so you can decide if it's worth opening the door ;). Along with second 'lounges' which are shared between blocks of 5 flats which have leather sofa's and plasma TV's showing full Sky packages. The best bit is that it's costing me £62 p/w fully inclusive of bills etc.

Can't complain a single bit. There might be similar apartment blocks where you're studying. Might be worth looking into.

why have you left it this late to look for accomodation? we thought we had left it late in march as all my friends had already put deposits down on housing. if you can move away from home i would definately recommend it.

i'm not really sure where omgshire is so i can't find any websites which might help in your search but you could try studentpad.co.uk. otherwise try speaking to the accomodation office at your university for landlords or letting agencies.

our 3 bed house is costing us £50/wk each not including bills.

If this isn't going to be Uni property don't forget you'll have to cover the costs during holidays as well.

Also worth making sure that you are all planning to leave at the same point at the end of the year and make sure your agreement with the landlord matches that.

Also figure out what will happen if your 3rd person doesn't pass her resit ...

We started hunting at May time.

As for location, the University is based in Kingston. We've been hunting through every property agency as well as checking out the daily vacancy list.
