Student of mine in young drummer of the year 2011

Cheers.

There's a few pics I took with the phone, really crappy out of focus I'm afraid.

Upstairs foyer custom cymbal and drum promo displays. After the show, a few kids were allowed to thrash the flock out of them. :D

He played brilliantly, what did he win then? :D

Well just the glass trophy thing he's holding, and they all got a bag of drum goodies worth about £400 apparently. More importantly for him, he showed me his recent emails today. One from NYJO (national youth jazz orchestra) who want him to come along. One from ITV for a new show this summer called 'Born to Shine' where talented people educate celebrities in a skill and the celebrity has to perform that skill live after a month of training. So he might be training a famous person on the telly :) Also, a few drum clinics including a possible support tour to gavin harrison of porcupine tree. Also, a few people have contacted him to record albums and single songs.

Ah I couldn't make out the trophy from the video, your reaction from holding the camera was brilliant :D

He should definitely go for NYJO, something I never managed to get into. He'd learn a lot and make some great friends/contacts. I joined NYWO for a year and played with some amazing musicians my age who really showed me talent, and the tutors there taught me lots of small things that I had never considered.

Wow, that kid is great, you really should feel proud to have had a hand in getting him to that level. Regardless of age he really is a cracking drummer, christ knows how good he'll be in five or ten years time .

Hi Merlin,

I thought you might be interested in constructively criticising my 9 year old nephew.
His main problem is that his drums are way louder than the music he can hear and he has ear protectors on.

I just hope he keeps it up.

He's a left hooker like Phil Collins.

He can keep time and if you can do that then the rest just clicks. I have seen some very proficient drummers at gigs who are technically very good but their timing often goes to pot.

What kit is that DmP ?

He started off playing right handed because we encouraged him to do that but when his tutor found out he switched him.

Hmm, Yamaha, hmm Pro, hmm not sure but it's his Dads (doesn't play anymore) and it is top notch.
I have a Yamaha Stage Custom and it's way up from that.

I put my trust in the fella who runs a small drum shop. I said I wanted a second hand kit and had a 500 quid budget give or take a few. He asked if he could have a week to source something which was fine.

He came up with a Ludwig CS Accent custom and it does make a good noise.

I have tweaked it a bit with extra cymbals and a sizzle ride.
