Student protester jailed

A young man's life ruined - yay! Don't know why a custodial sentence is really necessary, it was a stupid thing to do but no-one was hurt and he just got carried away in the moment. In comparison to what violent offenders usually get this is a very harsh sentence.

Good, he could have killed someone.

Length of sentence is to act as a deterrent. Can OCUK make up it's mind about the function of prison? I thought it was supposed to be a deterrent. Or is it to stop re-offending? If the latter, we'd best throw away the key, in case he has any further intentions in the field of high velocity fire extinguisher mayhem.

Yes but he didn't. He didn't even injure anyone. He got carried away and was stupid, I don't think there was any intent to injure anyone. A 12 month jail sentence would have been fine to get the point across. When you see some of the sentences handed down to people that have killed via dangerous driving etc, you'll see that this is harsh.

How can throwing a heavy object which would kill someone if it hit them onto a street below that contained at least 200+ people not be with intent? He knew exactly what he was doing and thought he would get away with it.

He ruined it himself.

bet hes out in less than a year , also look at the comments on the article , some truck driver aparently killed someone and got 4months....

guy throws a fire extinguisher and gets 3 years lol

I wonder how many people criticising the sentence would be doing the same if it happened during the muslim protests about the danish cartoons...

Bunch of idiots in here saying the sentence is harsh, he was a few inches away from most probably killing someone. He 100% knew what he was doing when he threw that off the roof.

Good riddance.

Goodo, although sadly it will cost us more to lock him up than educate him. It's a no win situation. Silly boy tbh who's ruined his own future with a mindless act.

something tells me there will be a protest about the length of his jail time, 14 months would have sufficed I think, hes an idiot but im willing to bet not malicious, chances are he didnt think 'im going to murder someone with this', he just didnt think of the consequences.

Got any evidence to back that up? Prison is supposed to rehabilitate people, fair enough if this isn't the guys first offence but I can't see how sending him to prison for three years isn't going to do anything other than make him more likely to re-offend in three years time. I thought the judiciary were supposed to be free from political interference?

To say that they have ruined a young mans life isnt correct. He ruined it when he made the decision to be a tit and fling a fire extinguisher off a roof. Imagine trying to start a career with that following you around the rest of your life, regardless of whether he got jail time or not he was screwed by his own doing.

To be fair no one was hurt, yes it was stupid, yes it was dangerous, yes it could have killed someone but it didn't.
How many people on this fourm have gone over the speed limit, you could have killed some one.imagine getting 3 years for speeding insteed of a fine.

Good but harsh, or should I say other sentences are to short. Carried away? I doubt there are fire extinguishers on the roof though. I expect appeal andsuspended sentence.
