Ok so if i get a phone upgrade, can i just swap the sim from my old phone into the new one? When my sis did hers recently they told her to put the new sim in and activate that..any reason for doing this?

New features on the SIM is the excuse usually given. Orange are the only ones I know that do this.
If you bought the phone SIM free, you can swap the SIM without issue. If you get a new SIM with the phone (ala Orange Upgrades), then there's nothing to be gained by not activating it. In fact, your cover for something (warranty? can't remember) isn't valid until you activate the new card.
