Stupid question re. washing car

What do you base that on?

A bit of light hearted micky taking?

Anybody who is anal about anything is ripe for a bit of ribbing, dont let it upset you.

I for one will start worrying about detailing my car when I have a salesman say to me "I would have given you a bit more had the paintwork not been a bit.........swirly under a certain light".
Which in 20 years, I've not had yet.

Every 6 months or 5000miles for mine. Annoying but good preventative maintenance washing is better than having to undertake corrective washing when things go swirly!!!!

Normally people who would buy a Toyota Aygo are particularly bothered if they can see a faint swirly mark though. :p
 
If this is the first time you have washed the car then I would suspect it is unlikely to be wearing any sort of wax. As such washing up liquid wont do any serious harm at all and will probably do a good job on any serious grime against milder 'car' shampoos that are designed to be gentle. If you are in anyway concerned though, regular cheapo hair shampoo will do the job....might want to avoid conditioner though :)
If you're not a hardened 'detailer' then get yourself a tin of collinite 476s or other such extra durable wax (which with moderate washing is good for between 4 and 6 months and then tin will last you a few years) and whatever car shampoo is on offer in halfrauds at the time.

Bearing in mind its a 6 billion dollar industry, do you think that there are millions of morons who buy into the bluff?

Let me ask you this, do you wash your clothes? What do you wash them in? Fairy liquid? Do you wash them only once they get so stained they can't be rescued?

Its not being anal, its about giving a toss about a purchase which is typically the second largest you will make.

Nothing will stop your car from going swirly, but with sensible washing techniques, you keep it looking a lot better for longer.

I think you should have your name changed to "over reaction man".

We all like our cars,we all like them shiny, some of us are seemingly capable of doing that AND finding the lengths they go to to keep them shiny amusing.

I personally would rather staple my eyelids to a mongoose than say, spend an afternoon polishing my headlights, or cleaning the insides of my alloys.

Hose, bucket of water, turtle wax car shampoo, turtle wax nano or whatever it is polish, a sponge, a pack of dusters and a chamois leather, done.

It's indicative of the lack of social skills some people posses that I have to go to this length to explain this, but if you and others love cleaning your car, then that is fantastic, that's great, good for you, it's good to have things in life you enjoy doing.

Other people like collecting stamps for instance, or looking at trains and it's good that they have something they enjoy doing as well.

And I'm sure we would have some light hearted discussion about that too.

mejinks, read the last paragraph I've quoted from atpbx and try to understand what he's saying, it's quite right.

I don't enjoy washing my car, but I do love seeing it clean, being rid of the dirt, tar and salt, and like to know it's protected as much as it can be for another 4 months.

Also, I'm a little different to atpbx in that I have a rotary, 2 types of pads in 2 sizes, a bottle of polish, a bottle of SRP, wheel cleaner, Wolfs shampoo, megs pads and a tub of collonite.

With the above I can get the swirls out of the paintwork, protect the car and wash it well with an excellent shampoo that does the job well. What you cannot grasp is that I'm taking the mick out of those buying all these fancy products when they already own previously 'flavour of the month' fancy products anyway, they just buy it because some internet forum and fancy pictures made them. It's quite funny.

My car looks just as shiny, with as little swirls and is well protected as many of the cars out there, but I don't need to spend hundreds or thousands to do it. I've done it well and can spend my time enjoying the car, driving it, rather than having a coronary thinking about the dirt you'l get on it the first drive after a wash.

It's a car, not a ****ing garden ornament, enjoy it, posting shiny reflection pics to internet nerds every week and spending a large part of your free time keeping it clean is just the trait of a show off, not a car enthusiast!

So because I don't share the same opinion as you I am wrong? I think if you have identified the fact you keep having to go to length explaining yourself, maybe you need to look at yourself rather than other peoples lack of social skills?
