Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. Basically I am trying to find a substitute for water.
The last few months I have been controlling my food intake using a lot of info I have gleamed from here :)

The one thing I still feel I am lacking is water though. I don't drink no where near enough water in my opinion. I will have about 2-3 pint glasses of water a day. Of course every now and then there maybe be a glass of coke/beer, but thats only if I go out with friends or take my gf out. Either way, I feel I should be getting more water.

The problem is I am getting to the point where I just can't stand the taste of it. The last couple of weeks I have only been drinking 1-2 pints of water if that... I know this is not good for me but I just can't stand the taste. I thought having squash or something, but I am a tad worried about the calorie intake from it.

So er long story short what could I drink instead of water ? :)

Edit
Actually I just thought of one possible substitute, would Green Tea work ? plus the antioxidants that it provides would be good ?

I just Squeeze a Lemon or lime into my Camel back at work, It takes the edge of the crap tasting water we have :)

Also try drinking water running from a tap, I have no idea what it is but i love drinking water that is running :D

Don't think you want to be drinking too much green tea! There's also only like 15-30 calories in a glass or squash so I would say that's your best bet.

Unfortunately water is the one thing there is no substitute for.

You can try high juice/squash with it, then water on it's own, mix it up a bit. It doesn't substitute it though.

its filtered water from one of our office water coolers. But I just hate it, I can drink like 1 or 2 pints happy then I just cannot drink any more water. My throat just closes up

I think the idea of mixing it up between green tea, squash and water is a good idea. I will try that.

I wish I could man up :( but I don't wanna drown myself :p

Freefaller would probably recommend squeezing a lemon into your water as Zip suggests, apparantly very tasty and aids fat burning but he'd be able to tell you more about that.

Adding some sort of flavour to the water, whether that is some form of squash or small quantities of fruit juice is unlikely to do you much harm compared to the benefits of drinking a good amount of water daily.

Yep I haven't tried the lemon thing but its meant to be very good. Personally if taste is that important I would just have some squash. I used to hate the taste of water, and never ever drank it as a child (always had that super cheap asda brand lemonade :\) but when I started lifting the benefits are just too important so I forced myself to drink tap water. Now I honestly enjoy it :)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using the no added sugar squashes from robinsons and the like. Just avoid the ones with sweetners in (aspartame et all).

The kcal intake is very, very low, the good ones are often only from fruit juices, and you still get plenty of good ol H20. With a bit of ice its lush too ;)

I used to get that with our water tap at work. My throat/mouth would go all dry, must be something they put in it/filter out.

Is there a kitchen area in the office? How about drawing water from a standard tap rather than a cooler?

Water can be drunk throughout the day, when you try and neck heavy amounts you tend to feel crappy and hate it.

I have a sports cap bottle with a 1ltr capacity knocking about at all times. Sipping regularly, dissapears before you know it. I tend to get through 3-4 litres a day.

PS. Green tea has some fantastic health benefits, but I can't imagine anything worse than drinking 2 litres a day of it. I recommend Roobus (redbush) tea over green anyway, more antioxidants and a fantastic array of other benefits.

The cooler is in a kitchen which is well a kitchen. It is in a seperate room from our offices/open plan offices.

As for the tap water, that is a deffo no as well the company I work for has its own water system and erm its not a good idea to drink it... :p There are sign's everywhere saying not to drink tap water so I'd rather not risk it.

I don't try and 'neck' loads of water I do tend to just sip at it through out the day its just as weeks have gone on I just cannot stand it anymore. I really have to try and force myself to drink the water at the end of the day and well as mentioned my throat just will not allow it.
The idea of having a sports cap bottle might be worth trying though rather than a glass, and before it is mentioned yes I do clean the glass I drink from :p

I might try the lemon idea, I wonder if people in the office will think I am crazy though if I bring in a bag of lemons :)

Don't all squashes either contain rather a lot of sugar, or lots of sweeteners?

As a secondary thing, are sweeteners bad for you? I thought I saw someone say how the body recognises sweeteners as being sugars, or something like that.

As you might be able to guess, my knowledge in this area is limited... :o

Sweetners can illicit insulin responses similiar to sugars in some cases yup! It's to do with taste reception.

Squash per 100ml is high in sugar yes. But don't forget you're diluting it heavily. Say 1 to 8-15 parts, there's something like 15-20kcal in a pint glass :) It's a small quantity which is far outweight by the benefit of good hydration.

Yes sweetners are bad for you. Take a look at some of the studies surrounding aspartame. It promotes cancer growth, bad times.

I find Frosty Jack a good substitute for water.

Has a mild kick to it as well.

Why do you feel you're lacking water out of interest?

I very rarely drink water on it's own. A litre of sports drink (during & after) a long run otherwise I rely on whatever I eat or drink through the day without giving too much thought to it. I'm rarely dehydrated and performance over the years wouldn't suggest I should do otherwise. I don't understand the 'you must drink X litres of pure water a day' stuff.
