Would adding a subwoofer to my system benefit me in any way? It's something I've always considered but have never been sure about. Current sound rig runs off PC, with:

Emu 1820m Soundcard + breakout
Cyrus Mono X Power
Cyrus Mono X Pre
PMC FB1+ Floorstanders

If you plan to use one with a stereo system then you need a sub with speaker connections a.k.a. High Level connections

Speaker wires from your amp go to the sub first. Then from the sub to your hi-fi speakers. The sub has a crossover filter. It takes the lower frequencies and passes the higher frequencies to the hi-fi speakers. The split of high to low is controlled by the LowPass control.

Just an observation, but your PMCs aren't exactly bass shy. The right sub will go deeper and louder of course, but that ain't going to be any old cheap sub. Nor should it be a home cinema sub.

To do the PMCs justice you should really spend a bit of cash on a sub that can do music - i.e. stop and start each note in a very controlled and precise manner. It's also got to play notes rather than just thumping away.

What is your budget for a sub?

Thanks for that lucid. I'm just enquiring for the near future, I don't have enough to spend atm. I would probably look to spend £900 to £1,500 which is probably proportionate to the rest of the system. Happy to go 2nd hand as well.
