Im having horrendous problems with my internet, it will be up for hours, then it will disconnect after any amount of time, 5 mins, 10 mins, 2 hours.

Ive changed routers, changed isp's, changed cables, changed filters, and its still happening, it looks like its a filter problem, but can you get stronger filters than the ones that come with modems?

I say it sounds like a filter issue if i pick up the phone straight after it disconnects i get a screechy line, its doing my head in. BT are doing line checks but it could take a week before i hear anything from them.

That sounds like a low SNR margin. I have loss of sync and lots of noice on the phone and disconecting like that.

Yes there is. The standard ones tend to be pretty cheap and cheerful (or not even that in your case :) ), they do the job but may not support caller id and not exactly top notch construction either. Depending what you have already you may see some gain to using a quality filter especially if its a cheapy non-branded job.
I changed over to the Excelsius Z-420UK filters recently (ebay - less postage) and saw my caller id spring to life and a slightly better SNR ration, they also stopped the Sky box from randomly not being able to find the phone line too.

read me has had some good feedback too.

I have bought one of their microfilters a few years back and I haven't had any problems with it.
I did originally have trouble with the standard BT filter that was provided (when I first upgraded to broadband), so it was a wise decision!

Try plugging your router into your BT master socket if you can. And remove the face plate (screwdriver) and plug it in there. This will remove any extensions on the line which may be causing your drop outs. Certainly was the case at my house. Two messed up extensions meant every so often we would just loos sync and keep disconnecting.

Luckily my dad realised this (extensions messed up) as he had done 17 years at BT :D
