Hello all,

System
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Motherboard: Suggestions please
RAM: Suggestions please (2GB)
PSU: Hiper 580W Modular (Bought)
Graphics Card: ATi X1800XT (Bought)
CPU Heatsink: Noctua NH-U12F (Bought)
HDD: 2 x 200GB SATA Seagate (Bought)

Any that have (Bought) after them come from my current system.

I'm fairly certain that I'll buy the E6600 because, even though I want to overclock, I will be keeping the overclock in the very very safe area as it's my first ever overclock. Any extra performance is free performance :D

Looking at threads, people have suggested Gigabyte GA 6965P DS3P and RAM could be either the GeIL 2GB PC6400 to Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR2 PC2-8500.

Thanks.

I'd be quite happy to recommend the DS3P but I might pick the Crucial Ballistix PC5300 C3 since it is about £40 cheaper than the PC8500 and it still overclocks very well apparantly. :)

So you'd recommend Crucial Ballistix PC5300 over the GeIL 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz?

Yea I would go with the DS3P ( Here )

Depending on your budget, either the Ballistix PC5300 or the Ballistix 8500.

The giel will clock above 900MHz but the Ballistix PC5300 will go above 1000 and the Ballistix 8500 is stock at 1066. ( please tell me if that made no sense )

Yep, it is cheaper (at the moment) and as Jaffa_Cake mentions should overclock further as it is based on the Micron D9 chips which the Geil probably isn't now. If you aren't going to be clocking much it is unlikely to make much difference but sometimes it is nice to know the potential is there. :)

Can it clock above the GeIL safety? E.g. it's not on the edge of stability? If people in the overclocking threads are saying its stable at 1000, I may try it at 925 - just to be safe.

I've been reading the Overclocking thread to learn more and more about it. When it comes to computers I usually do a learn-as-I-go system but in regards to this I can do damage.

I got the Giel to 950MHz with +0.2V, didn't stability check it though.

By the way, I'll be using the stock heat spreader, just in case you guy presumed otherwise. As I said, I'm up for overclocking the CPU because of the non-stock fan I'll be using but the RAM I'm a bit more sensitive about.

Don't worry. I'm defiantly getting the DS3P.

Now it's just between the GeIL, Ballistix PC5300 and Ballistix 8500.

I have enough for the 8500. Just if it's worth it :P

At this moment in time the Ballistix PC8500 is on offer for £99. Both that and the PC5300 can run at 1000MHz +.

If you can afford it go for the better stuff, but its really up to you, no right/wrong answer.

Thanks Jaffa. Is it relatively easy to get the PC5300 to 1000MHz?

Final question before I buy: will my Hiper 580W PSU be enough to power the beast of a system I'm about to upgrade too? :P

Yes, but Hipers blow up   Should be ok though lol.

I will post tonight how easy it is to get PC5300 to 1000Mhz because I will be doing it this evening. Watch thread :-)

Second person to tell me that. Haha. Suddenly the price of parts hits £500 from £400 for a new PSU. Looks like it will be a very good thing if you can get that PC5300 to 1000 MHz very easily. Might re think buying the non-stock CPU heatsink too lol

You MUST get a non-stock CPU cooler for that kind of overclock reallly.

By the way Jaffa, how come you only getting a 520W PSU for that spec? Don't you need more than that? Would save me a few pounds if you only need the 520W and not the 620W.

At the time I made that spec I couldn't afford a 620W and didn't think I would need it :)
