I’m considering replacing my 04 Fabia VRS with 31k miles on the clock. It’s the basic spec in red, I guess I could expect around £8k for it though I haven’t really looked into it, there’s no outstanding debt on it.

The reason I’m thinking of changing is that it’ll be 3 years old next March and I expect it’ll be easier to sell with a few months warranty left. Also my use pattern is changing significantly. I currently live 25 miles away from work, so do around 1000 miles a month just in commuting, around 18k a year. I’ll soon be moving to within walking distance of work so I’ll only be driving a very small amount during the week with most of my mileage coming from a small number of longer trips – maybe only 5,000 miles a year.

Still wanting to keep the costs down but fuel efficiency isn’t so critical any more, wouldn’t want to drop below 40mpg on a motorway run though!

I guess the priorities are cheaper to buy maybe a budget of £5k.
Low subsequent depreciation.
Motorway economy >40mpg.
Good build quality, Renaults and Citroens need not apply.
0-60 <9sec with half decent handling.
Pretty long service interval (in time rather than miles).
Reliable – really don’t want a £1000 repair bill 6 months down the line that would render the whole change pointless.
ABS and pretty decent crash protection.
No smaller than the Fabia.
It would be nice if the insurance wasn’t any more (Fabia is group 9).

Other than that I’m open to suggestions, so any ideas?

tricky one this, I'd be looking at 172's personally if I was in your situation, but your priorities are different, doubt you would get an ST170 in budget but I might be wrong, the insurace is bad on those for some reason anyway even though they aint that quick, sounds like a good choice if the early ones are in budget though.
2.0 litre 3 door focus?
even possibly an older beemer 323/328 or similar.
Go different, Import Toyota a starlet Glanza v, I love those little cars! so much fun!

What about something like a 2002 2.0 VVTi Toyota Avensis?

Meets most of your requirements, but even at £5k it'll still lose money quickly, and more importantly it's the dictionary definition of boring, boring to drive, boring to look at and boring inside. If you're only doing 5000 miles a year why bother with something designed to eat up huge motorway miles in the most boring way possible?

they are the latest must have !
I'm quite happy to walk/bike around locally... the car is mainly for occasional 30+ mile motorway trips and the supermarket I guess. For the long motorway trips I couldn't live with a <40mpg car, not due to cost but just the general annoyance of burning up so much fuel!

A BMW Mini Cooper..

Right money, no depreciation and sub 10 secs to 60! Should return over 40mpg on a motorway run too! Good handling, sporty looking and tidy!
