I need a...

Decent AM2 mobo, 2gb of RAM and a decent GFX card to go with it.

Anything up to £100 for the mobo and between £200 and £300 for the GFX card and surprise me with the ram

Dont plan to overclock or anything, just want stuff that works well straight out of the box.

how much faster is much faster? Havent really checked price differences, is there much difference price wise between equivalent chips?

On a new build with the sort of budget you talking about ... Core2duo all the way. No comparison between the two at the moment.

am24600x2 vs e6400. The 6400 is at least 10% faster and costs £10 less. Thats not even takinging into account low power consumption, Lower heat dissapation, etc. The cost to performance on Tom's hardware have the 4600@24 and the 6400@18 (lower is better and is a combined 50% games, 50% application comparison). In real terms thats 33% better value for money.

a lot, take a look at this review the differences might not be huge in some cases but trust me everyone will say the same because its true, conroe is way faster than any AM2 chip, just for reference an E6600 will beat an FX62 at stock speeds maybe even the E6400 is capablle of this
