Suggestions on what to buy

But the same can be said for it's "rivals". So to claim that the Type R is "cheaper to service than the competition" is an invalid statement...

Yeah I'd agree with that, to be honest there aren't too many cars (that broadly fit the other requirements and are in the same vein as the type R/ST etc) that you couldn't get under the "service only" criteria set if not using main dealer

Who said it was a "run"? I get 30+ on a cycle.

Thanks

What do you beleive a 'cycle' is?

What you probably mean is that you average 30mpg on a mix of town and motorway driving. Unless this mix is something like 20-30% town and 70-80% motorway this is probably unlikely.

They are cheap because the road tax is a joke.

Doesn't really matter though does it when you're looking at this type of car, nothing decent is THAT much cheaper to tax - Plus you're talking about the type of car that needs looking after, tax is the least of your (potential) financial worries

I *believe* a cycle is mixed driving.

The only "run" there was on the 8/9th June when I travelled to Oulton Park for the touring cars.

Every other fill up is between 7-10 days. Of which my driving is made up of:

- 10 miles round trip to work (50miles per week)
- 4 miles round trip to gf house (28 miles per week)
I then have the odd trip to the shops, which is also a 4 mile round trip. And then the odd countryside drive/blast here and there.

Good assumption. In fact you are highly wrong! My car is lucky to see the motorway, probably once a year at most.

Sometimes you are actually wrong you know

a lot of hot hatches are £200-270 to tax.

Two examples

Focus ST £270
FN2 Type R £270

That's exactly what I'm getting at r.e the tax - hardly a massive difference yearly, particularly when you take all the costs into account. You could easily see a £100-150 difference in insurance between even the 3 cars mentioned. Of course it could work out to the detriment of the mazda in which case i'd understand not buying one after everything has been weighed up, but the tax alone shouldn't be a reason
