Suggestions on what to buy

I got 41mpg going to skegness and back. Not bad for a 240BHP turd.

1 good thing i can say about it is the fuel consumption is very good for what it is. Granny driving will get you 29-30mpg around town and 40-45 down the motorway. Fun driving 17mpg around town and speedy motorway runs 25mpg. Friday night blasts about 7mpg.

Go get an ST, just don't come back with a VXR like some silly idiot did on here.

I just don't get it, you're so selective with your figures. It's like last time, you take your granddad-esque driving MPG and compare it to the EP3 when it's driven hard.

How am I selective with my figures? I took the average across all the prices you gave for the Type R. How is that not fair? If I a list of prices for the ST then I would also take the average of that too. However all I have is a specialist with upgraded RS plugs.

I could actually find much cheaper service 2 and 3 for the ST, but I actually took the highest price!! Hows that for "selective figures"!!

granddad-esque driving MPG
That's more of a claim really, since you have never seen my driving style at all!!

He can see your ridiculous claims of 30mpg in short local trips in a Focus ST though.

That surpasses even grandad mpg, was it being towed?

How is this ridiculous? Do you have years of experience driving a Focus ST on short trips?

When I was averaging 35mpg in my punto diesel on short trips I do see a point. This did go to 41mpg when I was doing 40 miles a day on A roads.

My mate who owns an ST, drives short distances with the odd A road blat has averaged 18.7mpg over the 5 year ownership.

No, but I do have 'years of experience' driving all sorts of stuff on short trips.

For example, 30-33mpg is what I get from numerous x20d's on short trips around town! And here is you claiming to get that from a 5 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a reputation for thirst?

Even my 2.0 16v Mondeo did 25-28 around town...

Just spotted this on AT, looks a bargain and fulfils most of your requirements, looks like it requires a service but it is well under budget.

Good find, but last of the saabs and a rush job to get out of the factory as well, so I wouldn't consider it, but thanks for looking.

So far then the views are:
Honda civic type R
350z
Mazda 3 mps
Volvo s40
Octavia VRS
Golf fit/r32( mark 4 shape I presume)

The choices I have discounted out of personal preference are:
S2000
Seat Leon or Cupra ( living in MK every other car is a seat :()

Also, I am not sure if the focus ST was a suggestion or not in the whole MPG fiasco, but if I can drag the thread kicking and screaming back on course, are there any other suggestions?

A 2008 9-5 isn't 'last of the Saabs' at all.

The 08 9-5 is the last model, first generation of 2. Pretty damn close to the last of the saabs. Also developed and produced at a time when the company was seriously struggling, and ultimately went in to administration, only to be brought out by spyker and for them to rush out the 9-5 gen 2 which was the last of the saabs.

An 08 9-5 is a facelifted version of the original 9-5 first released in the late 90's. A car that outstayed its welcome, for sure, but not exactly the 'last of the Saabs, rushed out of the factory'. They'd been sedately plodding them out of the factory for a decade at that point!

As you yourself note it was replaced by an all-new car in 2010 - THIS was the last of the Saab's. There were two all-new models released after the original 9-5 came out!
