Sum up your 2010 part of your photography journey

great thread, 2010 has been great for me. Ive been useing 35mm slrs since 1992, i have a cannon 500n and found it to give great results. I experimented with long exposure & dof and used it mainly for family pictures & moto-x . At the end of 09 i decided to "go digital" and had a 40d. I found it much quicker to learn with the digital as you get to see the effects instantly where with 35mm you dont see the result untill you have the film developed. I still see photography as a hobby and dont aim to get an income from it as i have a good job as an AA patrol. For some reason the fact that you own a dslr means most people think you are a pro lol so i suppose it was inevitable that i got asked to be the main tog at a friends wedding . As they were getting married on a shoestring and could not afford a proper photographer i agreed on the basis that it would be a wedding gift. The day went well although it was a bit nerve racking & they were very happy with the pics. I invested in a 70-200l f4 is & 24l and hope to continue learning & enjoying my hobby. Thanks to all on this forum that have given advice & tips & helped me along the way :)

Lots of nice stories in here.

I haven't touch my 10 year old Olympus SLR all year. It's just too old, slow and frustrating now. I've had my best out of it and then some really.

I hope to have my own story in the 2011 thread. I'm saving up for a 60D or better for early next year and really looking forward to it! :)

awful year for me photography wise- very busy at work and home, no time to spend out and about with camera, the small time I do get out and about - no time to process pictures afterwards!!

Even starting to get grief from family/missus about the amount of pictures of the wee man etc over the last year taken but next to none processed etc!!

Need to get my finger out over Christmas hols - get processing and then sort out stuff for next year. Still very very much a beginner in this game!

2010 saw us take on some big (well at least for us) new events, including a 3 dayer. which has allowed us to buy some new kit (1dmk3 and 2nd sig 70-200).

business has been gradually increasing, which is good as we've been slogging our arses off in some really cruddy weather. however hopefully 2011 will see that growth continue as well as branch out into other avenues.

I got my first DSLR in September. I got the Canon 1000D but havnt had time to take many pictures. I still don't have a clue how it all works and most of my pictures have been taken on automatic mode. I hope to get out more over the Christmas Holidays and get some decent photos. I also need to learn how to use all the functions of the camera etc.

My fav photo of this year

A first step on the DSLR ladder for me. A vast amount to learn and at my age, nearly 47, a long journey!!

Ditto-ish ^^^. Hopefully a rewarding journey, too.

And the same for me, Had a digital camera for years and like most people used it on auto all the time, got some nice shots but i want something to get me out and about more. So i have got myself a 400D and will take every picture in something other then auto from now on :-)

Hope to just learn more on the subject and have fun to. Going to try a "Project 52" in 2011.

Look forward to seeing everyone's photo's in 2011.

Good thread Phate, keep that hairdo btw, if I had half of it I'd be happy. :) Outstanding shots gaffer as well. Have really enjoyed the 2nd half of 2010 as I finally got a lens I'd wanted and have been happy snapping since. Enjoying my hobby at the minute.

If I had to pick one word to sum 2010, it would be "development". According to FLickr stats, my photo of they year according to interestingness:

I would have picked:

Next year: focus on quality over quantity, more competitions and trying to get stuff published, even for free if it will be worthwhile in the long run, take better wedding photographs (as a guest even), improve processing. Not that I haven't mentioned it: D90, Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 as a minimum, replacement walkabout lens for kit lens. Trips: Dubai at least, maybe Mauritius again, New York if I can find someone who wants to go with me.

I've had a pretty bad couple of years that I won't go into here, but suffice to say I only managed to get out and about on a handful of occasions. {edit} This makes it sound like I was in prison! I wasn't!

A recent(ish) trip to Caernarfon castle prodded my photography gland again, which led me to seriously look at how much time I waste doing things that don't matter at all when I could be making at least a record of things that go on in my lifetime, around me.

Mainly I'm planning on attempting to get at least 1 photo of semi decent quality (for me) done a week in 2011 as a result of this year.

The only things I've done that don't completely suck, are on my flickr account (link in sig), with a few mirrored on Deviant art.

Currently my Sigma 50 1.4 is stuck on the back of a frozen truck somewhere, and next month I'll be getting a 200mm Canon which I'm planning on using for some wildlife & countryside shots I've got in mind, and a lot of street photography with the 50mm. Hopefully I'll get a few candids done over Christmas if the lens doesn't need calibrating/returning.

That and my debts are paid off in January, which will allow me to save for the other items I need (decent tripod, flash, then 5DMKII). Things are looking up :)

I'm also mucking about with http://instagr.am/ when I'm bored, via my iphone (Bluesmachine). Oh and I forgot to mention I'm collecting silly little figures to take photos of too. I just bought a sackboy and a rabbid rabbit {edit} and now K9 :D

For me 2010 was a key year I think for my photography.

Started off with my Fujifilm bridge camera, that for some reason suddenly went from taking great clear colourful photos, to one I was ready to drop from a massive height, it just went totally totally rubbish! Grainy, dull, over doing reds/oranges so much that it almost loooked like they were selective colour shots generated in photoshop.

So, June, and my first DSLR, the 1000D. I was over the moon, and suddenly realised that I really didnt know a lot about taking photos and started on a big learning curve.

After lots of cash being spent since, I still have the 1000D but a list of accessories/lenses as long as my arm. I think being new to using a DSLR I wanted to just photograph everything possible. I always loved aviation photography so having a camera and lens capable of getting close to the action and also being able to take a lot more control of my photos has seen my acceptance rate on to sites such as jetphotos.net increase 10 fold.

Like I say, I have been giving everything a go, decided to work on a free website here where I am really just trying to display to others my recent work and possibly attract some interest within friends and family to get paid work. Which brings me on to my next point.

I am also thrilled to be taking photos for a paying customer this weekend, first paid work... pressure is on :), nothing spectacular just some photos of a girl from work who is a keen rower who wants some prints for her mother of her and her sister rowing on the river to be framed for an xmas present. :) So very very happy.

2011: For me I think 2011 will see the end of kit buying (apart from some basic studio lights), as I am just about to complete and get the keys to my first house with the better half, so funds will be tight for new gear, but I think I have enough at the moment to keep me happy and hopefully get some more paid work in the next 12 months.

Now, my favourite photo of 2010, a tough one, I am going by the photo thats probaby got the most "wow i like that" comments from friends and family, its just of a sunset taken by chance as the camera happened to be in the car. I sent this to the local paper and it was published too in the "readers photos" section they run. My first "published" photo.

Things were a bit stagnant for me this year. I shoot as a kinda second job and do mainly club events. That sector of the lesuire industry fell on its arse with the recession so work tailed off. Though Ive been busy with other things, got a house at the start of the year and a new car so all is good :)

Started the year as an amateur and finishing it semi pro.

Did a few weddings as a 2nd last year, then one this year. Took a loan out in November and spent £5k on a D700 and pro level gear and then did my first wedding.

There is still a hell of a lot I need to practice on and learn (sb900's for one), got my 2 websites to build, but I've already got several weddings booked for next year :)

Only properly started this year, got a D5000 at the very start of the year, and a 50mm 1.4 shortly after. I had all the intentions and enthusiasm to really get going, yet I just couldn't seem to find the time what with 2 jobs.

Recently just added a Tamron 17-50 2.8.

Im looking forward to next year, got plans to cover the christening of my friends baby, will start to enter more comps and have plans for travelling later on.

Still only just beginning, I bought a little Fuji S1500 at the start of the year and headed off into the snow. Literately, the thing landed on my desk about an hour before we were all sent home due to the weather.

In May I bought a Nikon D60, when I've had time I've enjoyed every minute of it. The biggest problem has been two other big things I had on. From the middle of summer I haven't been giving my photography enough time to really build my skills up.

I also need to work on my confidence. At the moment I still use the Fuji a heck of a lot. If for instance a band is playing at my local I know if I whip out an SLR people will assume I know what I'm doing. I also often find I'm a little lacking in reach with my little 18-55.

Both of the above excuses explain why I haven't really been posting anything, must try harder. :)

Next year I'm hoping to give it more time. Kit wise, I'm really hoping to get a couple more lenses. A telephoto and a prime. At the moment I'm fairly keen on the Sigma 70-300 APO and Nikkor 35mm F1.8. Although I' tempted to shell out the extra for a 50mm (the cheap Nikons not working with cheap primes is beginning to bug me a bit).

EDIT: I'll try to get some pics in.
