Monaco to win the CL next season...actually are they in the CL??. Wenger managed them a long time ago, wonder if hes tempted to go back seeing as they have some huge signings to come.

Who is the manager of Monaco by the way?? or are they looking to get a decent world class manager in??

EDIT: OK they just won the Ligue 2 title so will be in Ligue 1 next season. Will be interesting to see them go up against PSG, who are another 'filthy rich' club.

They just got promoted to Ligue 1 did they not :D?

No idea on manager

Nice to see that Falcao, Rodriguez & Moutinho aren't just money-grabbing mercenaries - oh hang on......

Surprised by Falcao really, he had his pick of teams in the Champions League and he goes for a team not even in Europe!

I wonder if he will exercise his right to do a bunk in the first year of his contract??

They are just like 95% of footballers, nothing wrong with that as long as they perform where they go.

I don't begrudge them going where the money is but surely once you get to a certain level, the money becomes less of a driver and they might actually want to win some (decent) trophies to look back on when they have finished their careers!

Hulk to Zenit, Eto to Anzhi etc just screams "money is more important to me than success"!!

Well Monaco I imagine firstly is a very nice place to live, much more so than Manchester/London. Also they may want to be part of a project that brings a team to glory, I mean Monaco are clearly serious about winning stuff if these signings go through. I'm sure money is a massive factor or Falcao may actually not have much choice due to him being owned by a company, but really for a team to become successful it generally needs to sign 'mercs' to get competitive.

Zenit and Anzhi do just seem like money moves to me though.

I've never really understood this criticism of footballers.

Long long gone are the days when you might stick with your boyhood club, for the 'love of the game'.

France might not be the biggest league in Europe, but it's not like these guys have gone off to play in some footballing backwater, never to be heard of again. With the money that Monaco have got, I suspect that many of those players are thinking they've got a good opportunity to earn a lot of money and also join a club which is potentially going somewhere.

Even when it comes to footballing backwaters (Russia, China, US, Middle East) - I can't really see anything wrong with guys like Drogba, Eto, Beckham, Trezeguet, Henry going off to maximise their earnings, particularly at the end of their career.

Personally I'd find it short-sighted for a younger player to go off to such places, just to earn a quick buck - as it's likely that it will stunt their progress, compared to playing in a more established league.

edit - just seen this:

Fair point, I'll concede that Monaco is probably not the worst place you can live! :D

:)

Like I said above, I don't begrudge anyone going anywhere for the money (especially towards the end of their careers!) but a lot of these guys are already millionaires many, many times over and I would have just expected the prestige of winning such things as the Champions League to be more of a priority for them!

Less-so for Falcao I guess because Monaco could become a European power again pretty quickly but Hulk to Zenit is just bonkers for me!

The most amusing part of it all is that Monaco might not even be in Ligue 1 depending on if the ban happens or not.

Why wouldnt they be in Ligue 1??, what ban are you talking about that could see them not play in the Ligue 1 next season.
